Dear US Poker Player, Republican presidential nominee John McCain needs to hear from you TODAY. This week, the Republican Platform Committee included language in the party platform (a document outlining the priorities of the GOP) that supports efforts to outlaw online poker and other forms of online gaming.

Those who wandered the hallways of the Rio during the 2008 World Series of Poker knew that the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) was out in force, spreading the message about the importance of players’ involvement in politics. The PPA booth was regularly buzzing with poker enthusiasts who wanted to become members, contact their members of Congress, and participate in the process.

Sometimes, a person can have the best of intentions… That seems to be the case with the Republican Representative Pete Sessions from Texas. On July 30th, 2008, he introduced a bill to the House of Representatives to clarify the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

The most recent study about online gambling and its consumers hails from the University of Western Ontario, where Professor June Cotte, J.S., came to the ultimate conclusion that online gambling should not only be legalized in the United States but regulated as well. This study is unique, as Cotte interviewed 30 live and online gamblers for her qualitative, image-based study.

Everything today has a shortened nickname; looking like alphabet soup to describe it. Not that long ago the alphabet was used mainly by TV stations, ABC, NBC and CBS. Then there were the government agency alphabet guys; FBI, CIA or to lump them all together, just the Feds. Now it seems like every official name gets shortened with no vowels to be bought anywhere.

Despite the efforts of attorney and former candidate for Washington Governor Lee Rousso and the Poker Players Alliance, online poker will remain illegal – a class C felony, in fact – in that state. The King County Superior Court judge ruled it so on May 15, 2008.

In February of 2008, California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine from Van Nuys introduced a bill to the California legislature that proposed a study of the legality of intrastate online poker. Less than two months later, the California Assembly Governmental Organization Committee (AGOC) unanimously passed it.
