Gus & Girls on Poker After Dark
Technically, the week-long series of new episodes of Poker After Dark
is being promoted by NBC as “Gus and the Ladies,” which is more politically correct. However, “Gus & Girls” has a better ring to it. Let better judgment be damned. The late night poker show has been doing themed shows, but most typically revolve around styles of play or commonalities, such as Jam Up Week with aggressive players who like to jam the pot, or World Champions Week. This week’s theme is a bit different, with a play on the idea that Gus Hansen has a reputation as a ladies’ man. So, Poker After Dark has taped a single-table tournament with Gus and five of the top female players in poker.
Joining Gus will be women who are likely concerned with winning and busting the only man at the table instead of flirting with Hansen – JJ Liu, Clonie Gowen, Vanessa Rousso, Erica Schoenberg, and Beth Shak. All are highly accomplished players and will be looking to take the winner-take-all prize of $120,000, not to mention a Poker After Dark title.
Gowen and Hansen are the only players at the table who have won on the show previously – Gowen with two victories and Hansen with only one. Gowen’s extra incentive to win is to tie the only other Poker After Dark player to have won three titles – Johnny Chan. Rousso has played on two prior shows but has yet to win one, leaving her perhaps the hungriest competitor of the six.
The series of shows chronicling the six-player match will begin on Monday night, March 31st at 2:05am and continue each weeknight until the match is decided on Friday night, April 4th. NBC will then air the Director’s Cut special late on Saturday night, April 5th, at 1am. (Check times for your time zone.)
