How Much Are You In For? Day Sixteen Of The WSOP
5:45 p.m.
I started late because I knew the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha with rebuys was starting at 5 p.m. and I
wanted to be around for most of the action on this one. I was a bit disappointed at first because it seemed like there was a large number of players missing that normally play this event. After walking through the $1,500 tournament briefly though, my faith was restored as the players I expected to be playing were. One table has got to be among the sickest starting tables I've ever seen. Check it out:Seat 1 – Robert Williamson III, a great PLO player

6:05 p.m.
A commotion comes from the “feature” table and I can hear Daniel Negreanu yelling for a card. Press swarms the table like vultures on a rotting carcass and you can't see any of the players because there is literally twenty players surrounding them. Negreanu wins the hand and starts doing a jig. Isn't that excessive celebration? I'm kidding of course, I kind of think that rule is a bit silly. If people want to act like complete idiots, let them.
They just announced a seat open on one of the tables. I never get players who buy into a rebuy event without planning on rebuying. If you can't handle the heat or action, you shouldn't play the event.
6:50 p.m.
Funny announcement from Steve, the floor supervisor, as players in the $1,500 NLHE go on their dinner break... “For those players going on their dinner break, you can sign up and play in the 7 p.m. $340 event. It starts in 8 minutes.” I don't think anyone but me and him got it though as no one laughed.
The $10,000 heads up is about to resume. Vanessa Selbst, the Mizrachi brothers, Lyle Berman, Kenny Tran, Gavin Griffin, Brandon Adams, and David Williams are all part of the Sweet Sixteen.
8:15 p.m.
Father's Day is here, and this must be Brother's Day. Blair Hinkle is the commanding chip leader with
three players left in the $2,000 NLHE event. His brother, Grant Hinkle, won a bracelet already this World Series. Michael Mizrachi and Robert Mizrachi have reached the final 16 in the heads up competition. If both players win their matches, they will play each other in the next round. Robert won his quickly, but Michael is having a tough time with Vanessa Selbst and has his work cut out for him if he wants to play his brother.I was watching the $5,000 PLO rebuy and see players do a double rebuy and toss $10,000 into the middle as if it's pocket change. I want to grab two of those 5K chips and run off and go register for the Main Event but there are too many cameras and security and I'm slow and fat. Maybe if I sit down in front of the tables with a cup they will take pity on me and throw me a few chips?
I was in the WSOP store grabbing a soft drink and noticed the damndest thing in front of the register. It's a dietary supplement, “brain support” formula that will help you stay alert, stay sharp, and stay on top. I'm not making this stuff up, that's what it really says. Here's the kicker. It's called “Go Heads Up” and it has a big smiling photo of Phil Hellmuth with his thumbs up on the front of the box. Excuse me while I laugh my ass off now.
Guess who joined the Hellmuth/Negreanu/Seidel/Lindgren table. Phil Ivey, that's who. If you thought the media was swarming that table before, you should see it now. How much is Negreanu the rebuy king in for? Try $85,000 (reportedly). The total number of rebuys and add ons was 483, an average of nearly 3 per person in the tournament. 1st place will pay $817,781. If Negreanu finishes in 18th place and cashes, he'll still be out $31,000.
10:30 p.m.
David Williams and Lyle Berman are involved in a marathon heads up match. The other seven
remaining participants are sitting around waiting for the event to end so they can play their next match, but unless it comes big hand versus big hand they might be waiting a while as the two are playing a very patient, controlled game. Williams was actually playing the $5,000 PLO event and did a double add on at the break. Lyle joked with him that he could lose the heads up match so he could get over to the PLO tournament but Williams took a pass on that invitation. In the $1,500 NLHE they are down to 350 players out of the original 2,706. The money is at 270 so they might hit that tonight. The Razz tournament is in the money and they have 29 players remaining. If I were a betting man, I'd guess that they might stop at 18 players tonight unless there is a mad rush of bust outs. The $5,000 PLO has a long ways to go as there are still 115 playing out of the 152 that started.
