Kathy Liebert - the first woman that won $1,000,000
Kathy Liebert, along with Annie Duke and Jennifer Harman, is considered to be one of the best female poker players in the world. Being a great tournament player, Kathy is known for her cool, incisive play and her professional demeanor. She is a huge contender in a game that has been always dominated by men. She won the first Party Poker Million tournament and received $1,000,000 and became the first woman to win a million dollar prize in a tournament. Kathy Liebert is one of the pioneers for poker playing women. She started playing poker when she was a kid in low stakes games with her family. Then she played low-limit poker in Colorado in 1991. She was a prop for a while and began playing tournament poker in 1994. Born in Tennessee, she grew up in Long Island, New York and now resides in Downey, California and Las Vegas. She earned a B.S. degree in business and finance from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Kathy understands the volatility of tournament poker. Kathy Liebert likes to enter some of her tournaments through single-table satellites because they offer a way to reduce costs and to practice her skills and although she has made a lot of money in poker tournaments, she maintains an investments portfolio and takes some of her winnings from poker and invests them in the stock market when a good opportunity comes along. She even worked in the stock market for some time.
Her biggest accomplishment to date is winning the inaugural Party Poker Million where the first place prize was $1,000,000. She made a deal with the second place and third place finishers, Berj Kacherian and Phil Hellmuth, so she only made about half of the announced prize. She is the first woman to ever win a poker tournament with a first prize of a million dollars.
What is more interesting, Kathy is currently ranked in the top ten money winners at the World Series of Poker for women. She also impressively won her first World Series of Poker bracelet in the 2004 Limit Hold'em Shootout. Some of her other final table appearances were:
- First in Omaha Hi-Lo at the 2003 Poker Derby
- First in No Limit Hold’em at 2003 Winning of the Green
- Second in Limit Hold’em at the 2003 World Series of Poker
- She made World Poker Tour final tables at The Bicycle Casino, Aruba and Ladies Night Invitational
Kathy stated the keys to her success have been her competitiveness and reading poker strategy literature as well as many hours of learning the fundamentals by playing low-limits when she started out. Over the years, she has built up an impressive reputation as a feared and respected competitor in the extremely challenging world of tournament poker.
