Main Event Winners Update
The last time I reported early on Day 3, there were still six former World Series of Poker champions in the thick of things, as well as a few celebrities. Here's what happened to them on Day 3 and the start of Day 4:1986 - Berry Johnston: He pretty much stayed even all day, which isn't a good thing when the blinds start to creep up. Johnston finished the day with 217,900. He was at about 240,000 at the first break of Day 4.
1996 - Huck Seed: He started the day with 280,500 and finished it nicely with 544,000. He was about 690,000 at the first break on Day 4. Seed told reporters that he only needs to finish 54th to be even for the Series. The payday? $190,053.
1998 - Scotty Nguyen: "The Prince of Poker" tripled his stack from the start of play. Nguyen went into Day 3 with a stack of 107,800 and came into Day 4 with 321,000 and was at about the same number during the first break.
2000 - Chris Ferguson: The second man to beat T.J. Cloutier heads up in the main event finished Day 2B with 160,900. He was eliminated in the second level of Day 3 after pushing with A♦-5♦ and running into Q♣-Q♦.
2001 - Juan Carlos Mortensen: Mortensen didn't move much on Day 3. He started the day with 254,700 and was only able to increase it to 284,000 by the end of the day. He was hovering around the same number at the first break Friday.
2002 - Robert Varkonyi: He won a nice pot near the end of Day 3 when his A-K held up against A-Q. Varkonyi finished the day with 424,000 in chips. He didn't move much during the first level on Day 4.
And as for the celebrities:
It's been well reported that Salvatore "Sully" Erna was fortunate to survive on the bubble when he rivered a full house after an opponent hit a four-outer straight on the turn against him. That pot put him up to about 200,000 in chips, but the Godsmack lead singer from Boston could do no more the rest of the way and goes into Day 4 with only 135,000 chips.
Tobey Maguire kept hanging in there. He was short practically all day, and not only made it past the bubble but to the end of the day as well. He took a hit late in the day when he doubled up a player with A-A when he got all in with his A-K. The former "Wonder Boys" star was pretty short as we moved to Day 4 with only 131,000 in chips. He was crippled during the first level when his K-K ran into A-A and eliminated shortly afterwards.
Film director Todd Phillips started Day 3 with 275,000 chips and his stack allowed him to hang around for most of the day. He was one of the last people to bust for the night when he went out 380th, good for a $34,644 payday.
One name I had forgotten to mention earlier was Sam Simon (pictured right), who is one of the producers of "The Simpsons." He was relatively short on the bubble, but got a nice double up with A-A vs. A-Q. Spurred on by his frequent rail bird Norm McDonald, Simon finished the day with 172,000 in chips. His Day 4 was short as he busted during the first level. Simon finished 329th, good for $39,445.
