Mike Conway wins first NPL UK Open Event
Coming from behind to top noted European pros Tony G. and The Hendon Mob's Dave "El Blondie" Colclough, Mike Conway surged past the other final table competitors in the £500 No Limit Hold Em event. Conway started the final table next to last in chips, as Tony G took a commanding lead into final table play, but managed to outlast the other five competitors to take down the prize pool and the first ever NPL televised tournament.Conway started off the action early, eliminating short stack Eion Kennedy when his A-Q out flopped Kennedy's pocket 6-6. No six on the turn or river for Kennedy, and he was eliminated, earning £550 for his efforts.
El Blondie was next to fall when the near-perfect A-J-9 flop for his A♣-J♣ was even better for Steven Razab's pocket 9-9. Colclough led out after the flop for half his stack, and when Razab pushed over the top, El Blondie made the call. He missed his other four outs on the turn and river, and Dave Colclough was eliminated in 5th place for £750.
Jason Ho picked up pocket Kings on the next hand, but Tony G. ran him down with his pocket 8s, catching an eight on the river to give Ho the heave, sending him home in 4th place for £1,250.
Unfortunately for Tony G, his luck ran out in the hand with Ho, and he found himself the short stack after a short period of 3-handed play. It was soon Tony's turn to get on his bike, as he raised pre-flop with Q-7, caught a 7 on the flop, but couldn't improve against Conway's flopped pair of Aces. A disappointing finish for Tony G, who started the day with the chip lead and had to settle for 3rd place and £1,850.
It took 26 hands of heads-up play for Conway to finish off runner-up Steven Razab, but in the end Conway's 6-high straight ran over Razab's wheel to send Razab home with the £3,100 second-place money and move Conway into the winner's circle for the £5,000 first prize
