It may be months away, but big charity functions deserve much publicity and a great deal of preparation. The Par and Poker Celebrity Challenge for Charity is scheduled for January 29, 2009, but registration is open already and the second annual tournament is already dedicating time and effort to making it a huge success for the Joyner-Walker Foundation that it will benefit.

Par and Poker

The Par and Poker Celebrity Challenge will take place during Super Bowl week in Tampa, Florida, and with registration open to the public, any registered players will be able to compete in the golf and/or poker tournaments for cash, prizes, and the benefit of a good cause. The price for the Texas no-limit hold’em poker tournament is only $500, which is giving away an incredible three seats to the 2009 World Series of Poker, and the cost for entry into the 18-hole golf tournament is $1,500 to play on the TPC Tampa Championship Golf Course.

Both events will be hosted by NFL Super Bowl Champion Seth Joyner and NCAA Champion Andy Walker, co-founders of the Joyner-Walker Foundation. In addition, numerous celebrities are already signing up to participate, including Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. More names will be added to the roster as the date approaches.

Smith noted, “To be part of this is very special. Hopefully we can come back nine or ten years from now and talk about how successful it’s been, how much money has been raised and how much good has come out of this.”

The Joyner-Walker Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing life skill programs to high school and college students to teach them how to be self-sufficient and prosper. The program includes education on handling various life experiences, financial literacy, time management, and other skills necessary to succeed in life. Mentoring and counseling are key components of the organization’s mission aimed at creating positive futures for today’s youth.
