In 2003, Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker Main Event and 2.5 million dollars. This was his very first live event. Because of this “anyone can do it” fever, the main event saw a jump from 839 entrants to 2,576, the biggest percentage jump in the history of the event. With the jump in participants came a jump in prize money.

An aptronym is a name that is specifically suited for its owner. Some recent examples of this are baseball father and son combination Cecil and Prince Fielder, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, and Lord Brain, famous neurologist. While all those are acceptable aptronyms, the one that stands out the most in my opinion is that of the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event winner, Chris Moneymaker.

This current time period in poker is responsible for a lot of ends of eras, and at the same time the start of others. The new millennium started with a World Series of Poker Main Event win by Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, the last wildly known player to win the event. The 2001 event was won by Juan Carlos Mortensen, the last full-time professional to do so.

Chris “Jesus” Ferguson started the new millennium with a bang, winning the 2000 World Series of Poker Main Event, but it was Juan Carlos Mortensen who put an end to an era. While many people consider Chris Moneymaker both the end of the “pro era” and the beginning of the “amateur era,” it was actually Mortensen that won the 2001 WSOP Main Event two years prior to Moneymaker.

Sixty-three year old pro Dan Harrington is easy to spot at the tables; he is almost always sporting a green Red Sox baseball cap. Playing poker for over 25 years Harrington is a legend of the game. He has written several books about poker and his Harrington on Hold ‘em is a poker best seller. Harrington has proven he can pass the test of time in the game.

Chris “Jesus” Ferguson doesn’t really compare to any other player we’ve showcased during the “Where Are They Now” series. Not surprisingly, that’s probably why he’s arguably the most successful player we’ve chronicled, at least in this series. Since his first appearance at a World Series of Poker event in 1993, no other player has cashed as many times as him.
