“Treetop” Jack Straus didn’t have a long, extensive career in poker due to his death, caused by a heart attack, at the age of just 58, but he certainly made the most of his playing career while he was here. Each successful poker player, especially World Series of Poker main event winners, seem to have very interesting stories, almost bordering on the line of folklore.

What a difference a year makes. The 1979 World Series of Poker Main Event was won by a relatively unknown player, Hal Fowler. The next year introduced the poker world to a player that would go down as one of the best players in history. Stu “The Kid” Ungar was a natural card player almost from the day he was born.

He’s one of the top players in online cash games, he’s won an FTOPS Main Event, and he just turned 21 a couple weeks ago. Alec ‘traheho’ Torelli isn’t just a poker player, he’s a businessman too. He recently launched a poker website created to aid players in transferring money between different poker sites called chipwalkers.com.

Up into this point of our “Where Are They Now” series, we have had at least some familiarity with our players. We’ve had Doyle Brunson, Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston, Brian "Sailor" Roberts, Bobby Baldwin, and Johnny Moss – a collection of the biggest names in poker that have helped shape the game into what it is today.

Bobby Baldwin is unique in a world full of unique poker players. What separates him from the rest of the bunch is that he made his mark in the world of poker before making his mark in the world of business. In other words, most poker players bring their already established “business bankroll” with them to their first big poker game.

He’s just barely legal to play in a US casino and he’s already cashed for well over $300,000 in live tournaments. Online life’s been even sweeter. He’s cashed for several hundred thousand dollars and has won numerous events including the PokerStars $1000 WCOOP event. He’s got the attention and respect of his peers and now he just needs that bracelet.

He already had a bracelet, a million dollars in live cashes, thousands in online cashes and on March 14th 2008 he added a World Poker Tour title to that mix, along with a cool million dollar pay out. 26 year-old Brandon Cantu is high off of his recent win up in San Jose and isn’t letting off the gas anytime soon. If you follow the rankings of online players then you must know Russell Carson. Known online as rdcrsn and heyfreddy on Full Tilt Poker, this 25 year-old Canadian is dominating online tournament poker. He is currently ranked 4th on pocketfives.com and he has cashed in tournaments for over $1,903,402 and $400,000 of that in 2008 alone. Today he is sitting at The Round Table.
