Charity Report: PPA Tournament for Paralyzed Vets Set for GOP Convention
With the back-to-back political conventions, the Poker Players Alliance took the opportunity
to make their presence known at both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. And since the PPA had the chance to incorporate a very deserving and appropriate charity into the mix, the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is the organization that benefits from it.Last week, the PPA hosted a charity poker tournament in Denver, the site of the Democratic National Convention, and raised about $60,000 for the PVA. Of all of the attendees, celebrities and poker pros included, it was Ben Affleck who ultimately won the tournament.
This week, the PPA will host its second charity tournament, this time in conjunction with the American Gaming Association, held on Wednesday night, September 3rd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, near the site of the Republican National Convention. Festivities will kick off at 10pm with a VIP reception, and the $1000 per-person buy-in tournament will begin at 10:30pm. As was the theme of the previous tournament, all proceeds will be donated to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Scheduled to attend from the poker community are Greg Raymer, Victor Ramdin, and Chris Wallace. In addition, Barry Greenstein is slated to appear, though it has not been determined if he will play in the tournament. All in all, the PPA is said to expect 125 players for the tournament and more than 200 people attending the event. The PVA has been in existence since 1946 as a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting military veterans with disabilities. Members of the PVA are committed to devote a great deal of energy and passion to the advocacy of paralyzed veterans, specifically as it pertains to quality health care, research and education addressing spinal cord injuries, benefits available as a result of members’ military service, and civil rights and opportunities to ensure the independence of members.
