The Works
The Works is a catchall used to describe something that encompasses everything pertaining to a subject. At PokerWorks, we love the term ‘works' because it gives us a lot of leeway in using many subjects and we don't have to specialize. We feel that's the way poker was meant to be played and perceived - a combination of everything that makes poker the great game that it is.
How would one begin to describe the WSOP other than as being part of The Works? The WSOP is comprised of a number of tournaments with different buy-ins and games, employees that spend 24/7 on site to make it happen, the media that portrays it, players that come from around the globe to play their hearts out and champion to show poker as the great game it is...a game of people played with cards. Prepare to witness the GAME, and all of its intricacies, through the pages of The Works.
4:40 p.m.Shortly before the break I was talking with Shaun Deeb who had just doubled up with pocket jacks against pocket kings when he hit a straight flush on the turn. Maya Antonius is sitting next to Deeb and I noticed the size of her wedding ring. I tapped Deeb on the shoulder and said, “look at the size of that thing.

11:15 a.m.1,251 players will be starting play within an hour. It will be a day of highs and lows. Some players will experience both as they lose a big pot but manage to recover before the day is over. Others will start off crushing the competition and think they can coast into fame and fortune only to have a unbelievable series of events have them eliminated before the day is over.

5:35 p.m. Rick Fuller was just dealt a cooler but the way his elimination went down is interesting, and well…perplexing to say the least. Fuller opened the pot for 800 and was re-raised by a woman to 2,800. Fuller pushed all in for about 12,000 and the woman took off her earphones and asked for a count of Fuller's stack. After nearly a minute of thought, she called and turned over aces.

It was all about the numbers. And the numbers were positive, which prompted a collective sigh of relief all around.Day 1D of the 2008 WSOP $10K main event was important. In order to show that poker was alive and well and that Harrah’s knew how to bring the players to the Rio in greater numbers than last year, the number of entrants needed to be higher than 2007.

11:30 a.m.I had a peek behind the green box covering up the number of participants. It was 6,721. This means that the 2008 Main Event will easily surpass the number of players that played in 2007. It's nowhere close to the 2006 Main Event, but until the UIGEA is changed, it probably never will be. What this means is there will be a huge field playing today...

8:10 p.m.No bad beat stories this time, ran jacks into queens and that was that. C'est la vie. I'll try again next year (and the one after that, and the one after that). Players are on their dinner break right now. The room is filled with dealers staring absently at the cards in front of them. Some are shuffling the cut cards, others are having conversation with dealers around them.

The main source of excitement on Day 1C was the increased number of entrants and a greater number of professional players in the crowd. And then there was the rail full of fans, significantly thicker than the past two days. But first, let’s look at the numbers.

11:30 a.m.Andy Griggs, the country singer who sang the national anthem yesterday is warming up on the stage that they use to kick off the events. I'm not a big country music fan... ok, I hate it, but I gotta admit it this guy's songs are kinda catchy. I found myself tapping my foot and wanting to yell Yee Haw! at the top of my lungs. 11:40 a.m. They are letting the dead money in.

My dream of playing in the WSOP Main Event is over, at least for this year. I played one last mega and made it very deep, deeper than I had in the previous two and close enough that I could almost envision playing on Sunday. It's a story filled with bad beats so I'll spare you all the details. Let's just say I'm irritated and leave it at that.
