The Works
The Works is a catchall used to describe something that encompasses everything pertaining to a subject. At PokerWorks, we love the term ‘works' because it gives us a lot of leeway in using many subjects and we don't have to specialize. We feel that's the way poker was meant to be played and perceived - a combination of everything that makes poker the great game that it is.
How would one begin to describe the WSOP other than as being part of The Works? The WSOP is comprised of a number of tournaments with different buy-ins and games, employees that spend 24/7 on site to make it happen, the media that portrays it, players that come from around the globe to play their hearts out and champion to show poker as the great game it is...a game of people played with cards. Prepare to witness the GAME, and all of its intricacies, through the pages of The Works.
Day 1A was described as the big day. But in truth, there are four big days – four first days set up to best accommodate all starting players. For those players who entered the Amazon Room with their buy-in vouchers today, this was the big day. It’s all about perspective. Each player comes here with hope. “It’s going to be me.

11:40 a.m.They are letting the players in. This time to Jamiroquai, a huge improvement on the crap they played yesterday. You can always tell who is excited to be here as they are the first ones in when the doors open. They clutch their registration card as if it is their last born child and look across the vast room to locate their table. Little to do they know what they have in store for them.

Poker’s big day had arrived. The preparations began before the 2007 WSOP had concluded, and it took a combination of time and effort on the parts of players and executives to make sure the 2008 World Series of Poker $10,000 World Championship No-Limit Hold’em went off without a hitch. When the time came to make it happen on July 3, 2008, everyone seemed ready.Players were ready.

2:45 p.m.Players have returned from the first break and the blinds have gone from 50/100 to 100/200. I always hate how tournaments insist on doubling the blinds after one level. It's still 100 big blinds if you have your starting stack, but why can't they throw in a 75/150 level to give even more play.

10:45 a.m.I got here a little early, mainly to make sure I beat the mad rush that will get here in about an hour and to make sure I got a seat on media row. There is NO event like the Main Event in poker. People can talk all they want about the WPT Championship or the 50K H.O.R.S.E. event but this is the one that everybody dreams of... it's the impossible dream...

Last year, I missed the Ante Up For Africa event because it was one of the few days off I had. This year, I wanted to see it and made it a priority to come to. Wow, I had no idea what I was in for. Now I know why celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears go a little crazy with all the paparazzi chasing them around. It was/is a madhouse here.

1:00 p.m.I spent yesterday sick - at home - in bed. Of course, sick in bed = play the Sunday big tournaments on line. I cashed in both the Poker Stars Sunday Million and the Full Tilt 750K guaranteed but didn't win enough to meet my goal of buying in direct to the Main Event (I was treating the two events kind of like a mega satellite, if I won close to 10K, I'd buy in).

I got here a little early today as I know what it's like on the day of a weekend $1,500 NLHE tournament. I'm all the way on the other end of the Rio in Buzio's and I'll make that long trek soon, but as I was walking in I already witnessed eager players clutching their registration cards heading that way.

1:00 p.m.Yesterday, I spent the day walking through the various casinos of Las Vegas, sightseeing with my girlfriend. One thing I noticed was just how diverse the tourists in Vegas are. There are people from all over the world. Asian, Hispanic, European... you name it, they are here. Then you have all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Fat, skinny, and in between. Tall, short, and gigantic.

If there is one theme of this WSOP it is definitely ‘the year of the pro.’Bracelet after bracelet is being won by the pros and final table after final table is stacked full of the best in the world. Several big names are dominating the field, including Chris Ferguson with 4 cashes, 2 of those final tables and 1 just shy.
