Tournaments
The 2008 Aussie Millions Tournament Series kicked off with 537 players registered for Event #1, a $1,100 No Limit Hold ‘Em event. Poker Stars from around the world descended on the Crown Casino in Melbourne, including Kenna James, 2007 World Series of Poker bracelet winner Jeffrey Lisandro and Jimmy ‘gobboboy’ Fricke, the runner-up from the 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event.

Play resumed at 2 p.m. with 14 players. Four players were eliminated in the first 45 minutes and they are now setting up the final table of 10. Ronald Brown was eliminated in 14th place which was good for $2,167. David Gibraltar was eliminated in 13th place also good for $2,167. Tom Wentzel went out at the hands of Marc Truong when they got it all in on a 10-7-7-9 board.

9 p.m. Coverage starts with 70 players of the original 517 left in the field. 45 will get paid (1st place will receive $72,705) and the blinds are at 400/800 with a 100 ante. The average chip stack is approximately 18,000. I did a quick walk through of the tournament area and while there weren't any name players (well they aren't “name” yet...

Dutch Boyd is best known for his deep finish in the World Series of Poker main event the year Chris Moneymaker won it. In the poker world, he's also known for a failed poker website that never returned some of the deposits of its players. Something Dutch would like to forget but never can seem to (probably because of people like me who always bring it up).

10 a.m. I arrived a little early to get my media pass. Things are a little different for the World Poker Open now because they have some competition with the WSOP Circuit event in town. That does not seem to change the attitude or demeanor of the people involved with the WPO though...

Talk about an action packed beginning to a final table. In the first ten minutes, the two chip leaders tangled. The action started with Kimberly Robertson raising first to act. Becket Moore, the chip leader, re-raised. Robertson didn't think long before putting all of her chips in the middle and Becket must have felt as if he was committed as he called with Ace Jack.

On January 30th, Shawn Marion of the Phoenix Suns will host a charity poker tournament and other fundraising activities to benefit a variety of charities, including the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, Free Arts of Arizona, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Brad Pitt’s Global Green USA Project in New Orleans, and the Jerome Bettis: Bus Stops Here Foundation.

You're driving through fields of nothing... a sea of pastures and farms.

The Motor City Casino will host the second Charity Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament featuring members of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. With the success of the November 7th, 2007 event, organizers have scheduled the next one for March 3rd, 2008. The buy-in for the poker tournament is $500, all of which will be donated to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation.

A poker tournament will be held on January 19, 2008 in Parker, Colorado to benefit the Parker Sky Sox youth baseball clubs. The event is scheduled to raise funds to help with the cost of equipment, uniforms, travel, and registration fees.The new Black Bear Golf Club in Parker will be the location of the tournament that will run from 5pm to 11pm, though registration will begin at 4:30pm.
