Poker Celebrities

How popular is poker? The World Series of Poker started in 1970 with a handful of players -- now the World Series of Poker, the World Poker Tour, and the International Poker Federation (just to name a few) have truly turned poker into a worldwide phenomenon. Winners of any of these prestigious tournaments (past and present) have become our own poker celebrities. In interviews after winning these world-recognized events, almost to a one, the winners state luck is a big factor. To win more than one of them is truly a great achievement.

Amarillo Slim Preston won the World Series of Poker in 1972 -- his persona is widely known among poker players and his track record and place in poker history is assured. Books are written and films are being made about him. One famous quote -- "Nobody is always a winner; and anybody who says he is, is either a liar or doesn't play poker."

Doyle Brunson is considered a poker legend. He won the World Series of Poker twice. His book "Super/System: How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker" is called the "Bible of Poker" and is as popular and relevant today as it was when it was first published. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to play poker.

Johnny Chan is another two-time winner of the World Series of Poker (1987 and 1988). Still a major force, you will find him playing high-limit poker today. The big screen hasn't forgotten him either, as he protrayed himself in the film "Rounders".

Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker in 2003 when he was 27 years old. He parlayed a $40 satellite into a $2.5 million payday! Gives us all hope.

Greg Raymer was 2004's champion at the World Series. There was a record 2,576 players entered in the tournament (the largest in history). His payday was $5 million -- and to get through that big a field -- he deserves every penny!

Young and inexperienced or seasoned veteran -- online qualifier or buying your seat in the big event -- it matters not. All you need are good skills, good timing, and luck to the max!! So many stars have emerged in the poker world today (you will find news about them on this site). We salute them all and hope, of course, to be able to play against them some day!! Here's wishing the reader good luck and good fortune and see you at the tables!
