T'is the season

T'is the season to take a vacation. When I spent all of my free time at the tables in Las Vegas, I noticed that from Thanksgiving to Christmas the action really dried up. Most of the tourists were staying at home and saving their money for the Holidays. Today, with online play and no travel costs, you can usually find a pretty good game online, but I'll bet the live games still slow down while Christmas bells are ringing. I know they still have games but I'll bet the action just isn't there, but come Boxing Day, (the 26th of December,) that all changes. In fact that week between Christmas and New Year's Eve is probably one of the most profitable periods in poker. Everyone is playing like there is no tomorrow. Even players that normally play ultra tight loosen up some and take a few chances. Of course the amount of booze involved might play some part in the action, but it really appears to be the attitude. Like a bunch of lemmings, everyone is rushing toward the end of the Year. Everyone is rooting for their home team in the Bowl games and hoping by some miracle their 6-8 football team will make the playoffs.

Then at the stroke of Midnight on the 31st of December it all changes. The New Year's resolutions kick in and all of sudden even the loosest players tighten up and games where five and six players were seeing the flop become rock gardens where few hands are multi way. Almost every hand becomes a heads-up encounter. Even though many players are quite drunk, somehow they find a way to tighten up their play and stick to those standards that they set up as part of their resolutions.

Luckily it doesn't last. Everyone starts having that extra helping. All the smokers are lighting up, and the Donks are drawing to almost impossible odds. The normal end date for this dry spell is the Super Bowl. Win or lose everyone sees that as the signal to start gambling again. So, if you have been looking for the time to take a break, pick January. The pickings are slim and you can spend some time with your family. Of course if you delay the start and eventual demise of your New Years resolutions until after everyone else has fallen off the wagon, you can pick up some extra profit during February.

Merry Christmas and Good Luck for the New Year. Make sure to check out the great bonuses that PokerWorks has found for you through the Featured Poker Rooms listed here.
