Charity Report: T.J. Martell Foundation to Host First Charity Tournament

The Las Vegas Hilton will be the scene for the first ever T.J. Martell Foundation’s first celebrity poker tournament on December 11th. Scheduling the event for the week of the National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas and securing an all star line up are sure fire ways to ensure a successful event.

Las Vegas is currently inundated with rodeo fans from all over the world, so there was no better time for the T.J. Martell Foundation to host their charity tournament. Promising to participate in the event are Luke Bryan, Houston Hutton, Buddy Jewell, Charley Pride, Britt Bockius, Tracy Byrd, Rodney Carrington, Lee Greenwood, Justin McBride, and Trent Willmon. And serving as Master of Ceremonies is Robin Leach.

Festivities are set to begin at 11am on December 11th with a media reception and charity auction, and the poker tournament will start at noon.

The tournament is limited to 150 players but seats may still be available, and 120 will be paid out of the $50,000 prize pool, which includes cash and prizes. To play in the tournament, a $500 buy-in has been established along with a $40 registration fee. There will be rebuys and add-ons available.

All proceeds will benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation, which funds various research centers for the treatment and cure of leukemia, cancer, and AIDS. The organization was started when T.J. Martell asked his father, music industry executive Tony Martell, to help raise a million dollars for leukemia research that allowed T.J. to reach his nineteenth birthday. Though Tony’s son died later that year, he vowed to uphold that promise by holding their first fundraising event in 1975. He then founded the foundation to honor his son and help with the hopeful eradication of diseases that cut short so many lives.

To date, the T.J. Martell Foundation has raised more than $225 million for the eight research centers to which it donates. They participate and host numerous charity events throughout the year.

The poker community might be familiar with the charity organization because it has teamed up with Vince Neil and his Skylar Neil Memorial Fund for several years to host the Off the Strip Charity Poker Tournament. Having gained much respect and support from the poker community, the T.J. Martell Foundation decided to host its own event.
