The Poker Celebrity Bowl is scheduled to take place on Friday, February 1st at 3pm in Phoenix and will be hosted by Major League Baseball player Royce Clayton. All proceeds will go to benefit the Royce Clayton Family Foundation.
Harrah’s AK-Chin Casino, specifically the ballroom, will be the location of the fundraising poker tournament. The buy-in is set at $1,000 with $200 rebuys. Half of the prize pool will go to the charity and the rest will be distributed amongst the top ten tournament finishers. The first place prize also includes a $10,000 seat into the 2008 World Series of Poker main event, and the second place finisher will receive a seat into the Heartland Poker Tour main event at the Majestic Star Casino.
The field promises to be an all-star one with sports stars, celebrities, and poker pros. MLB players committed to participating are Luis Gonzales, Ryan Howard, Kyle Lohse, Brian Roberts, Kenny Lofton, Jimmy Rollins, and Geoff Jenkins. Celebrities scheduled to attend are Montel Williams, Willie Garson, Dondre Whitfield, and Tony Denison. And poker pros Robert Williamson III, Jamie Gold, Chris Ferguson, and Annie Duke have sent in their RSVP’s.
Clayton, who now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, began the Royce Clayton Family Foundation in 1997 in order to raise funds and promote awareness for education, homeless children, battered women, sickle cell anemia, and athletic opportunities for minority youth. The MLB star has used his years – more than a decade – in the baseball community to organize and participate in charity work around the country.
Anyone is welcome to attend the Poker Celebrity Bowl at no cost, but players must register and pay the buy-in, as seats are limited to 240 players. More information about registration and the tournament can be obtained by calling 480-802-5183 or visit the Harrah’s AK-Chin poker room.
