The majority of Paraguay’s income is derived from exports of beef and soybeans. This relatively small country of almost 7 million residents is amazingly, the world’s third largest soybean exporter. Paraguay relies heavily on trade with Brazil and Argentina, as those two countries buy the majority of Paraguay’s exports.
Paraguay suffers an unequal class system, with an estimated 1 in 3 of its citizens being poor. According to a Census Bureau Household Survey, almost half of Paraguayans are at poverty level. In rural areas, almost 42% of the people do not have an income sufficient to cover their basic needs. In the urban areas, 28% of the people are considered poor. The unequal class system is further demonstrated in land ownership, where 10% of Paraguayans own over 65% of the land.
Even though Paraguay does not rely on tourism to boost their economy, there are many places that attract tourists. One popular tourist destination is the Yacht and Golf Club Casino located in the capitol city of Asuncion.
The Yacht and Golf Club Casino offers poker and has three tables. The most popular poker games with locals and tourists are Stud and Hold’em. Most casinos also hold regular poker tournaments, which are very well attended, proving poker is as hot in Paraguay as it is throughout South America and the rest of the world.
Besides the casino in Asuncion, Paraguay has two other casinos, the Ciudad del Este located in the city of Ciudad del Este and the San Bernardino casino in the city of San Bernardino.
