The next round of players to take the stage was the Diamonds bracket, which kicked off a little after 2pm.
Those chosen for this bracket were:
• Clonie Gowen and Jennifer Tilly • Daniel Negreanu and Michael Mizrachi • Barry Greenstein and Howard Lederer • Jason Alexander and Huck Seed • David Pham and Brian Townsend • David Benyamine and Jennifer Harman • Sam Farha and Doyle Brunson • Erick Lindgren and Eli Elezra Several pros showed up to sweat the action, including recently eliminated Todd Brunson watching Doyle, Joe Sebok sweating Barry, Phil Laak watching girlfriend Jennifer Tilly and Phil Hellmuth who was kind of sweating everyone, including himself.
Laak told me that Jen doesn’t like him watching her but he tried to sneak in anyways. Echoing what most players feel about this event, Phil said, “You never know about these things. It’s a carnival ride.”
I decided to jump on the ride and take a prop bet with Laak. He of course bet on Miss Tilly to win and I took the cyclone, better known as Clonie Gowen. Just after we shook on the bet Jen noticed Phil in the crowd and shouted out to him, “Hey Phil, I think Clonie just bluffed me out of a big hand. She’s crafty!”
Sammy Farha had another unhappy finish at the heads up event and was defeated, to Todd’s delight, by his father, Doyle.
Seinfeld alum and recent poker ‘pro’ Jason Alexander was quite chatty during his match with Huck Seed, but their conversation didn’t last long after Huck eliminated Jason with A-J.
Shortly after Jason exited the stage, I picked up a cool $50 bill from the Unabomber when Clonie took out Jennifer.
“She’s a tough cookie!” Jennifer said with her bubbly voice and a half smile on her face. Clonie also gave respect to Jennifer’s game. “When I drew Jen Tilly, some people said, ‘good draw,’ but I did not underestimate her, she has come a long way with her game in the last few years.” Daniel Negreanu bid adieu when The Grinder…well…grinded him after quite a back and forth match. That back and forth also included Barry and Howard getting all in preflop with the same hand (A-K). Barry made Sebok’s sweat worthwhile and sent the Professor back to school.
In what was one of those matches that could go either way, it went the way of Brian Townsend over David Pham. As for the rest of ‘em, David Benyamine took out fellow big game player Jennifer Harman and then Erick Lindgren Eli-minated Eli Elezra.
