Charity Report: Two Events in L.A. to Benefit Writers & Wildlife
March 06 2008, Jennifer Newell
The first event coming up will be on Saturday, March 8th at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles, California to benefit the Wildlife Waystation, a sanctuary for endangered animals. The no-limit hold’em poker tournament will be accompanied by a silent auction.
The buy-in for the tournament is $194 + $6 + $25 entry fee. There will be multiple rebuys available for $100. While a good portion of the money will go toward building a prize pool for the participants, $30 from every buy-in and $15 from each rebuy will be donated to the Wildlife Waystation.
The silent auction will offer interesting items, including original paintings of wild animals, tickets to the tapings of various television shows in Los Angeles, signed scripts, autographed sports items, and a personal tour of the wildlife sanctuary with an evening dinner. All proceeds from the silent auction will go to the charity.
The Wildlife Waystation is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating wild and exotic animals. It is located on 160 acres in California’s Angeles National Forest. Founded in 1976 by wildlife expert Martine Colette, the Wildlife Waystation has provided sanctuary for over 75,000 animals in its one-of-a-kind licensed facility through the years. It is funded solely through donations and fundraising activities.

On Sunday, March 9th, the Industry Support Fund charity poker tournament will be in full swing at Hollywood Park Casino in Los Angeles. The event will benefit writers who were not members of the Writers Guild of America but who were financially harmed by the recent writers’ strike.
Festivities will kick off at 1pm with a free lunch of hot dogs donated by the most visited landmark operations in all of Los Angeles, Pink’s Hot Dogs. The poker tournament is scheduled to kick off at 2pm. There is a $200 buy-in with $100 rebuys, a portion of all tournament monies to be donated to the Industry Support Fund.
The Writers Guild Foundation (WGA) established the Industry Support Fund to assist non-WGA industry members who are in financial distress as a direct result of the strike. The fund provides said industry workers with emergency assistance for food, housing, medical needs, and other necessary expenses. This organization makes grants to organizations like The Actors Fund who already provide such emergency financial assistance and social services, and it assists individuals who do not qualify for other organizations or whose financial need is greater than those organizations can provide.
Organizers of the poker tournament are urging participants to pre-register in order to provide a head count to Pink’s, though walk-up registration will be allowed.
