World Poker - Suriname

You may be looking at the name of this country and thinking, where in the world is that? Don’t feel bad, many people have never heard of the Republic of Suriname. What they have heard of is this country's former names - Nederlands Guyana, Netherlands Guiana or Dutch Guiana.

Suriname is the smallest country in South America, with a land area of only 63,251 square miles and a population just under 500,000. Located between French Guiana to the east and Guyana on the west, Suriname’s southern border is shared with Brazil. The Northern side of the country is all coastal and borders the Atlantic Ocean.

Even though the country is small, its terrain is very diverse, ranging from rainforests in the south, to beautiful beaches in the north. A full 12% of the land area in Suriname is dedicated to national parks and lakes, which is a big attraction for nature lovers.

The economy in Suriname depends mostly on its mining export bauxite, which is used to make aluminum. Tourism is not big business, but many visitors do come, mainly from northern Brazil. The main attraction for the Brazilians is Suriname’s casinos. Since gambling is illegal in Brazil, many Brazilians visit their neighbor’s casinos to gamble.

Gambling is a huge industry the world over and casinos are popping up everywhere, even in small countries like Suriname. Gambling is just as popular with the 250,000 residents of this little country as it is with visitors. Although the language primarily spoken is Dutch, the casino personnel are known to be friendly, helpful and multilingual.

Unlike many casinos in South America, Suriname’s gaming venues offer some nice perks to their players. These are offerings that any visitor to Las Vegas would be familiar with, like bars, entertainment, night clubs, a coffee shop and free drinks.

Currently there are four casinos in Suriname, all located in the capitol city of Paramaribo.

For visiting poker players, all four of the casinos in Paramaribo offer some form of poker. Although Caribbean Stud is the favored game of locals, most of Suriname’s casinos offer Hold’em poker games and small buy-in tournaments.

The casinos are open an average of 20 hours a day, with weekends seeing the most action.

Hotel Ambassador and Casino is in Paramaribo at South Redmondstraat 66-68. The casino's gaming space features 84 slot machines and 18 table games. The property also has one restaurant and a hotel with 16 rooms. The casino is located inside the small hotel.

The Princess Casino Suriname is located at Wagenweg Strasse 81in. The Princess is the only casino open 24 hours a day. The casino has 372 slot machines and 15 table games. One table game is listed as poker. The property has one restaurant, but no hotel.

Suriname Torarica Hotel Casino is at Riebergplein No 1. The casino is open from 10a.m. until 4a.m daily. The casino's gaming has 160 slot machines, four table and 1 poker games. The property has two restaurants, one bar and a hotel with 132 rooms.

The Golden Truly Hotel & Casino is located at Jozef Israelstraat 43. The casino is open Sunday through Monday, noon until 4a.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon until 6a.m. The casino's gaming floor has 136 slot machines and 19 table games. Of the table games, four are listed as poker. The property also has two restaurants and a 20 room hotel.

For players looking for a private game, if you are in Suriname, you can ask some of the locals if there are poker games in the area. It is said private games run regularly, especially in Paramaribo. Tourists should be cautious of playing in any private game or one of the small illegal joints. Any private game, anywhere in the world, can be risky at best, and is not recommended. Use good judgment, have fun and be safe while visiting Suriname.
