The 39th annual 2008 World Series is ready to begin, and the excitement is building. With two days of satellites leading up to the Friday, May 30th official kickoff, Las Vegas is filling up with poker players and media from around the world so as not to miss a moment of the action.

There will be a total of 55 bracelet events taking place from May 30th to July 14th, and those 47 days will be filled with excitement, cash, bracelets, new poker records, and history. For a refresher of some of the most important things to know, this article should help. And for a complete schedule of events, a list is provided at the click of a button.

From the moment the tournaments are set into motion at noon on May 30th, history will be made. The schedule itself boasts of a record number of eight championship events, including the first ever $10,000 World Championship of Pot-Limit Hold’em, as well as the format change to the final table of the $10,000 World Championship of No-Limit Texas Hold’em main event. With a four-month delay between July 14th when the final nine players in the biggest poker tournament of the year will be known, until November 9th when they return to play down to a winner, poker may experience a popularity boom as the excitement builds for the semi-live final table, which will be aired on ESPN on the same day that one player wins the championship.

Other records are bound to be broken during the 2008 WSOP. Phil Hellmuth will be going for a record 12th bracelet, and Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan will be competing to tie Hellmuth’s current record of 11 bracelets. Numerous other players will be looking to break the record for most cashes in one WSOP, youngest and/or oldest person to win a bracelet, and most bracelets in one WSOP.

A list of records set in 2007, all of which could be broken in 2008, is as follows:

• Most total entrants for all events: 54,288
• Largest prize pool for all events: $159,796,918
• Largest $50,000 World Championship H.O.R.S.E.: 148 players
• Largest Ladies World Championship: 1,286 players
• Largest Seniors World Championship: 1,882 players
• Largest field of players for non-main event: 2,998 ($1,500 NLHE)
• Largest non-main event prize pool: $7.1 million ($50,000 H.O.R.S.E.)
• Largest non-main event first prize: $2.2 million ($50,000 H.O.R.S.E.)
• Oldest player to compete in a WSOP event: 94-yr. old Jack Ury
• Youngest player to win a WSOP event: Steve Billirakis (21 yrs. 11 days)

In addition, the 2007 boasted of participation from 87 different countries around the world, a record which could be broken this year. Also in progress is the longest winning streak in the history of the WSOP of amateurs winning the main event 7 years running. Can a professional player win the main event to buck the trend?

WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack encourages everyone to take part in the 2008 WSOP: “If you’ve dreamed of becoming a WSOP champion, this is the year to enter. With 55 opportunities to win a bracelet, more $1,500 and $10,000 events than ever before, and same day television coverage of our main event final table, the WSOP stage has never been brighter.”

Indeed, the 2008 World Series of Poker is not to be missed. Whether in Vegas or right here on this website, don’t miss out on history in the making! Be sure to check PokerWorks every day for a variety in reporting that will give you the full flavor of the 2008 WSOP.
