2008 WSOP Event #36 Recap

On June 19th-21st, the $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em championship, Event #36 was held. The event attracted an impressive roster of 2,447 entries, with the top 198 finishers collecting their share of the $3,340,155 prize pool. This was the fourth of seven $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em tournaments on the 2008 WSOP schedule. Aside from the Main Event, this is the most popular event during the tournament series.

The tournament was played out over three consecutive days with the final table being played on the ESPN main stage. Bluff Media was on hand to film the event for broadcast on ESPN360. The Omaha High-Low Split World Championship final table was also running at the same time on a secondary table nearby, giving spectators plenty of action to watch.

The “ex-champ never wins” curse continues. Ryan Young, last year’s champion for the event, played but failed to cash. This brings the current streak to 36 straight non-cashes for defending champions in their respective events.

Jesper Hougaard, a professional poker player from Copenhagen, Denmark, bested the huge field to emerge the 2008 $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em champion. The former player and a coach for the Danish National Table Tennis Team, the 24-year-old left his position on the team to play in cash games and poker tournaments throughout Europe. Pocketing $610,304 and sporting a gold bracelet to show for his victory, Hougaard stated that his poker success had its roots in table tennis. He compared the two competitions by saying, “the ability to lose a point or a game in table tennis and being forced to immediately re-focus on the next shot as a key quality for winning poker players, you have to regroup.” He added, “That is something we do in table tennis. You have to always get ready for the next match.”

Hougaard’s interest in poker was inspired by the success of fellow countryman Gus Hansen. Poker’s popularity boomed in Denmark after “the Great Dane” won several major poker tournaments. One of those watching was Hougaard, who was drawn to the game. Although he is Danish, Hougaard lived for many years in England when his father was stationed in London as an official with N.A.T.O.

Immediately after his victory, Hougaard was interviewed by Howard David from ESPN360. Asked about a key hand at the final table where he managed to catch a lucky card on the river and knock out a dangerous opponent, Aaron Kanter, Hougaard said, “When I hit that card, I jumped up higher than Kobe Bryant.” Sportscaster Howard David retorted, “Wait a minute – no one in Denmark jumps higher than Kobe Bryant!” To which Hougaard responded, “Yeah, but I did!”

Hougaard was being cheered on by an enthusiastic group of more than a dozen Danish friends and fans, making the final table seem like an Olympic event. Constant chants in Danish were heard throughout the event from Hougaard’s cheering section. The new World Champ cited the fans and many people watching the broadcast on ESPN360 back in Denmark as keys to keeping him focused on victory. “I want to thank everyone in Denmark and Greenland who I know has been watching this,” he said. “I know it is six-o’clock in the morning over there right now. I am so glad to could make it worthwhile. Thank you.”

During most of the final day, Hougaard had no problem dominating the table, until the point during heads-up play when he lost this chip lead. After taking a much needed break, Hougaard stated that he called his father and brother, living in Denmark then put on headphones and listened to a popular song called “Eye of the Tiger.” Fifteen minutes after the break, Hougaard emerged as only the second WSOP gold bracelet winner in history from Denmark. Also with Hougaard’s win, Denmark becomes the seventh nation to produce a gold bracelet winner at this year’s WSOP. This list now includes Canada, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Italy, Russia, and the United States.

Cody Slaubaugh, a 23-year-old student from Rugby, North Dakota finished in second place after a head-up match that lasted 90 minutes. This was Slaubaugh’s first final table showing, marking his fourth cash at this year’s WSOP, and sixth cash in his short poker career. It took eight hours before the final table turned into a heads-up match. Knocked out in third place was Aaron Kanter, best known for finishing fourth in the 2005 WSOP Main Event.

Finishing ninth was John Shipley from Solihull, England who was a seventh-place finisher in the 2002 WSOP Main Event. Duncan “Pumper” Bell, who won the $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em championship, Event #13, took 20th place in this event.

Former Gold bracelet winners who finished in the money were:

• 46th place-Praz Banzi, from the UK, winner of a WSOP gold bracelet in 2006.

• 80th place-Two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Freddy Deeb.

• 163rd place- Former WSOP gold bracelet winner “Syracuse Chirs” Tsiprailidis.
