2008 WSOP Event #39 Recap

The $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em championship was the fifth event held at the 2008 WSOP. Event #39 attracted 2,720 entries, with the top 270 finishers sharing the $3,712,800 prize pool. This was the fifth of seven $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em tournaments on the event schedule this year. Other than the Main Event, the No Limit Hold’em events at this buy-in level have proven to be the most popular draw at the WSOP. Over the last 39 years, more $1,500 buy-in NLH tournaments have been held at the WSOP than any other event.

The tournament was played over three consecutive days, with the final table being held on the ESPN main stage and was broadcast by Bluff Media on ESPN360. A milestone was crossed at the conclusion of Event #39, when it was noted that over the last 39 years, more than 12,000 different players have now cashed in the World Series of Poker. Also of note was the fact that of that total, 117 players have each won over a million dollars at the WSOP.

Robert Cheun, last year’s champion for this event did not compete this year, bringing the “non-cashes for defending champions in their respective events” tally to 39 straight.

The winner of Event #39 was David “The Magnificent” Woo, a 30-year-old poker pro from Atlanta, GA. Born in South Korea Woo has been playing professionally for about five years. After graduating from Georgia State University, Woo owned and operated a small coffee shop. After discovering poker and playing recreationally at night for awhile, he realized he was making more money with his poker game, so he decided to give up the coffee shop. Woo likes all forms of gambling, proven by the fact that he once made a $50,000 side bet with a friend on a basketball court. Woo bet that he could make at least 80 of 100 three-pointers. Woo seemed an incredible underdog to win the bet, as he stands no more than 5’5” tall and doesn’t look the part of a basketball player. What his wager accepting friend didn’t know was; Woo had perfected a three-point shot while he was a student at Georgia State. Much to everyone’s surprise Woo ended up making more than 80 percent of his shots and won the bet.

Woo’s moniker, “The Magnificent” was bestowed upon him by his poker buddy, Josh Arieh, a two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner from Atlanta. Woo and Arieh play in home games regularly and it was in one of these games that Arieh tagged Woo with the ‘magnificent’ nickname.

For first place Woo not only took home his first title and gold bracelet, but a hefty $631,656 as well. This marked Woo’s fourth cash finish at the WSOP since he began entering it in 2005. In the 2006 WSOP Main Event, Woo had a serious shot at going all the way when he was one of the chip leaders after Day Four. Fate stepped in unfortunately when he was second in chips to Jamie Gold. Woo lost a huge pot and never being able to recover his stack, he was knocked out in 132nd place.

After his victory in Event #39 Woo said, “Every time I play, poker is a learning experience. I would have been sick with anything less than first place, I really expected to win.”

The final table clocked in at 6.5 hours, with Matthew Wood, from Canada coming in second. The heads-up match proved to be a tongue twister for tournament announcer Robbie Thompson, who had difficulty with the similar names of Wood and Woo.

Third place finisher was Eric Beren a recent graduate of M.I.T., a school well known for producing some amazing poker players.

The final table saw only one former WSOP gold bracelet winner, Thom Werthmann, from suburban Detroit who finished fifth. Werthmann won his bracelet in 2005 in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha championship.

Besides finishing seventh in this event, Curtis Early had an interesting experience at the WSOP. While he was moving from Dallas to Seattle, he decided to stop for a few days in Las Vegas. On a whim he entered the event and made the final table. Early’s U-Haul trailer could be spotted hitched to his car in the Rio parking lot, while he collected his prize money of $113,240.
Florida poker professional and former criminal defense attorney Mike Glasser, finished in eighth place. Glasser, a WSOP bracelet owner, joined other former champions who cashed in this event including; Mike Carson (22nd), Minh Nguyen (24th), Barry Greenstein (108th), Hasan Habib (126th), Hilbert Shirey (163rd), Humberto Brenes (184th), and John Hom (214th). This win marked Humberto Brenes’ 52nd career WSOP in-the-money finish, making the Costa Rican fifth on the all-time cashes’ list.

Through Event #39, only two players have made three final table appearances; Jacobo Fernandez and David Benyamine. The sixteen players that have made two WSOP final table appearances are; Chris Bjorin, Andy Bloch, Alex Bolotin, Scott Clements, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Barry Greenstein, Fu Wong, Greg Jamison, Mike Matusow, Erick Lindgren, Minh Ly, Daniel Negreanu, David Singer, J.C. Tran, Theo Tran, and Tim West.
