There is no doubt that some of the best poker players of the past few years have come from Scandinavia. But one particular Swedish player has been a force in tournament poker since before the newer pros even considered picking up a deck of cards. Johan Storakers has been a professional poker player for 12 years, and he recently acquired a sponsorship deal through Full Tilt Poker.

Storakers’ live tournament results date back to late 1996, and his first wins came in back-to-back Midnight Sun tournaments in Helsinki in 1998 and 1999. Though the Stockholm-native’s first game was seven-card stud, he cut his teeth playing a variety of games, like pot-limit and no-limit hold’em and pot-limit Omaha, in low-stakes ring games and tournaments in Europe. Mentoring he received from Swedish pro Gunnar Ostling soon translated into skills that he used to begin playing poker on a full-time basis in 1997.

Since that time, Storakers has accumulated more than 70 major live tournament cashes, including nine in World Series of Poker events. But it was the World Poker Tour that brought him international fame, with eight cashes, two of which were final tables - third place in the 2005 Ultimate Poker Classic and second in the 2005 L.A. Poker Classic. To date, his record shows that he has earned nearly $2.5 million from live tournament cases alone.
