Vanessa Rousso Launches Game Theory - Poker Bootcamp Series

She is known for her intelligence in the poker community. Her background in game theory obtained from classes at Duke University brought a new perspective to the game, and it has helped her become an ever-present force on the worldwide tournament circuit. Now Vanessa Rousso will be taking her honors-level education to poker students in Florida with a seven-workshop series called the “Art of Poker” Strategy Tour.

There are poker instruction courses and seminars given on a regular basis, but Rousso’s endeavor brings a fresh and unique perspective to poker education. Partnering with Big Slick Boot Camp, Rousso plans to offer one-day seminars that concentrate heavily on game theory and the important and applicable teachings of Sun Tzu and “The Art of War.”

While the idea of game theory is complex in its entirety, the basic concepts are ones that can not only be taught in an easy-to-understand manner but can be immensely useful in the game of poker. As the website notes, “The clinic is centered around the concept that the most successful playing tactics are based on uniform strategic maneuvers… The clinic offers players an arsenal of survival tools that will yield more accurate hand-analysis, and situation-specific ways to outwit your opponents.”

The Florida native chose her home state as the launching pad for her new series, having set up seven appearances at three different casinos throughout the months of March and April. It will begin with some informal dates, such as her participation in a charity tournament on March 20th at the Jacksonville Orange Park Kennel Club to support her new anti-poverty organization, The No Limit, No Profit Initiative, along with several other charities. The following day will include a return for an invitation-only tournament and a short lecture on game theory for the players. Two more appearances will then lead up to the first-ever “Art of Poker” instructional camp at the Isle Casino in Pompano Beach on April 5th.

The next two stops in the instructional series will be April 11th at the Jacksonville Orange Park Kennel Club and April 26th at the Palm Beach Kennel Club.

Each one of the bootcamps is an all-day occasion, and the price listed on the website is $399.99. Each class will begin in the morning with the issuing of a badge and outline booklet. Rousso and co-instructors will be there to greet the students, where autographs and photos will be welcomed. The class itself will consist of presentations and interactive learning labs, where students will be able to practice what they’ve learned while being critiqued by the instructors. There will also be ample time for questions and answers at the end of each presentation.

The 26-year old Rousso has been a force on the poker scene since she first scored an impressive seventh place at the 2006 World Poker Tour $25K World Championship. Since that time, she has accumulated numerous results in poker tournaments, most recently finishing second at the 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship for a $250,000 prize and worldwide recognition for her ability to beat pros like Doyle Brunson and Phil Ivey on her way to the final round. Her successes in poker were prefaced by educational honors from Duke University, from which she graduated with honors in only 2.5 years, and University of Miami Law School, where she is close to graduation.
