Indiana Casino Becomes WPT Stop and Brands Poker Room

In mid-June, just as everyone in the tournament poker world waited for the next season schedule from the World Poker Tour, it was announced by the Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg in Indiana that it will be the newest stop on the 2009-2010 tour in addition to branding its new poker room as the WPT Poker Room.

The casino will host several World Poker Tour events, though it is unclear if these events will be satellite opportunities or simply WPT-sponsored tournaments. Those include the Indiana State Poker Championship from August 3-19, Hollywood Fall Classic from November 9-25, and the Tri-State Poker Championship from May 10-26. But the one that seems to be on the list as including an actual $10K WPT main event that will be filmed and eventually televised on Fox Sports Net is the Hollywood Poker Open, set to take place from January 25 to February 11. Each of the tournament series will provide opportunities for various poker games along with seniors-only and ladies-only events.

WPT founder and CEO Steve Lipscomb commented, “We are so thrilled to add the Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg to our tour - not only is this our first ever WPT stop in the Midwest, but it’s also our first ever WPT event on a riverboat-style property. The Hollywood Casino not only adds a new and unique element to the tour for professional players, but it’s also the perfect property for bringing the WPT experience to players in the Midwest.”

All of the festivities going forward, beginning with the August Indiana State Poker Championship, will be held in the new Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg set to open on June 26, located in Indiana but just minutes from the Ohio border and 30 minutes from Cincinnati. The former Argosy Casino Hotel Lawrenceburg is the largest riverboat casino in the United States and will boast of the largest card room in the Midwest. The card room will be branded as the World Poker Tour poker room and will contain all new furniture, equipment, and 41 tables.

Some of the perks of the new poker room include new leather, high-back chairs built with rollers and lumbar support for player comfort. Tables will feature electronic readers so players can be acknowledged as soon as they are seated. Moreover, the room will provide 22 large-screen televisions. And players will find that there will be a wide variety of levels, games, and options for every step a player takes, all the way up to higher limits, which will be confined to a nine-table area on a raised platform.

Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg general manager Tony Rodio noted, “Our space compaires with the elite poker rooms in Las Vegas. There’s nothing like it in the region, and we expect players throughout the Midwest to travel here and make Cincinnati one of the country’s major poker destinations.”

Some of the first offerings for players in the new room will consist of two daily poker tournaments - at 11:15am and 7:15pm - and guests are invited to participate in the ongoing cash games and other events yet to be announced.
