I came into the Rio early this morning to make sure I could secure a seat in Media Row. It was 9:45 a.m. local time and the room was quiet. There were no dealers, no floor people, and only one security guard. In one corner, a few cash games were being played and workers were setting up the tables with the proper amount of chairs and “swag” that each player would get. The swag this year was a snack bag of beef jerky and a seat cushion.

Beth Shak looks at me as I walk by. She's sitting at her table ten minutes before the dinner break is over. “A little anxious Beth?” I ask her. “I tell you Aaron, I just want to make it through the day, but I have a really good feeling so far.” Other players like Nick Frangos can't say the same. As I was walking to the restaurant for dinner, Nick was walking beside me, oblivious to everyone. “F***ing ridiculous,” he muttered under his breath and started having a conversation. I thought maybe he was on the phone, but he was talking to himself.

It was a spectacle. The Rio Convention Center was ready for the throngs of people in every way possible, from the staff prepared to conduct registrations to the signage that boasts of numerous sponsorships. Televisions in the hallway played previous WSOP final tables in a loop, security was ready for any potential breaches of rules or space, and vendors were stocked with all the snacks and supplies that poker players and their guests might need.The 40th Annual World Series of Poker was ready for its Main Event.In truth, the WSOP had been underway for just more than five weeks already.

It was a sad day for the poker community when it was discovered that Lee Munzer died on June 26, 2009 at the age of 66. The well-known poker writer and friend to many in the poker world seemed to have succumbed to cancer and left the world too early.Munzer was born on May 3, 1943, and found his way to poker where his words were published in hundreds of magazine columns, including some for CardPlayer, and websites like PokerPages. But he was also known for his photography, especially of women in poker, and his wit that accompanied all of his work.
