Main Event, Day 1B – Snooze Fest July 5, 2009

Main Event, Day 1B – Snooze Fest

I knew it was a bad sign when they let the players in and only 5-6 tables in the Red section had tournament players taking seats in them. This meant that Brasilia would not be used and that at best there would be 900-1,000 players playing today. This puts the Main Event well behind the pace set the last two years and it's looking like we will have our lowest turn out since 2005. The next two days will still be extremely busy, but 7,000 is definitely out the door and we'll be lucky if we surpass 6,500. Read more

Main Event, Day 1B – Oops, We Shoulda Thought Of That July 5, 2009

Main Event, Day 1B – Oops, We Shoulda Thought Of That

The day 1's merge into two separate day 2's. It's not a problem on day 1A and day 1B because of the small field size guaranteeing a field size that the Rio can handle on day 2A, but day 2B is a completely different animal. The thing is, with the increase in chip stacks by 50% (from 20,000 to 30,000) the issue with almost making the money on day 2 is a moot point – it's simply not going to happen. Right now about 75% of the players have been making it through day 1 to day 2. Last year there was approximately 4,400 people that played on day 1C and 1D. 75% of 4,400 is 3,300. Read more

Brunson has become the one figure that consistently and positively represents poker. Read more

As the 2009 World Series of Poker began its much-anticipated $10K No-Limit Hold’em Main Event, a successful set of preliminary tournaments was already in the history books.
