A man in a suit walks out into the crowded hallway. At this moment, at least to the hundred or so people in line he looks a bit like the Grim Reaper. He takes his place in the center of the hallway and says “I'm sorry to say but at this time we will not be selling any more seats for the Main Event. The tournament is sold out.” There's a brief moment of silence. The players waiting to register are stunned, shocked, in disbelief. The quiet lasts less than a second.“What do you mean it's sold out?

It's late, around 10:15 at night, on day 1C of the Main Event. I'm working on my computer and get an e-mail message from a friend of mine. I read the e-mail and in it she tells me that she is coming out in the morning to play. She tells me that she will be getting in at 10:30 a.m. and asks me if I would do her a favor because she heard that the event might sell out. She asks if I would text her in the morning and give her updates on it if is filling up so she knows whether to rush in to the Rio or not.

The first Sunday of July was one that found somewhat of a decrease in the number of registrants in the major tournaments on PokerStars, which was presumably due to the beginning days of the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas. Many of the big names in online poker were taking their shots at the most prestigious live tournaments in all of poker, though there was still a large contingent of players unable to make it to the Rio or pony up the $10,000 buy-in, and those players took part in the Sunday tradition of PokerStars tournaments.

The last of the four starting days of the 2009 World Series of Poker $10K Main Event is significant for several reasons, the most obvious being that the final numbers are reported. Until registration closes on Day 1D, there is mostly rampant speculation about the final number of players in the Main Event.The final number is an indicator of many things, but primarily it is a tell-tale sign of the state of poker.
