On September 11th a very unique event took place when Party Poker and Ace Magazine teamed up to create the first ever ‘Poker in the Sky’ tournament. And just what made this event so unique? It was truly a high flying event because it took place 50 meters up - above Copenhagen!

Rising above the masses, Poker in the Sky made its mark as the cards were literally ‘in the air’ when they hit the felt high above Copenhagen’s Town Hall. It all started when 22 poker players were hoisted 50 meters in the air by a crane at City Hall Square as a curious crowd gathered on the ground to watch the high hand action. Among the sky high players were two local celebrities including a Danish ‘Survivor’ winner and radio personality.

Missing the action was WSOP Europe bracelet winner and Danish poker celebrity Theo Jorgensen, who remained grounded when he withdrew from the event the week before it started, citing his fear of heights as his reason for not participating. But another non-related Jorgensen named Johannes proved he could fly high with the best of them when he repeatedly pushed in his chips while joking, “Maybe Theo is getting a bit old.”

As the clouds rolled by, it was Johannes Jorgensen, a 24-year-old Copenhagen journalist who bested his opponents to take down the first place win and pocketing a $13,000 prize package to the PartyPoker World Open V in London in October.

Elated by his win and the altitude, Jorgensen said: “The fact that the game was high up in the sky certainly added a different element to my play. I’m not at all scared of heights and am a fan of bungee jumping so I targeted players who I thought were keen to get down as quick as possible with aggressive play! In addition, I targeted those who I deduced had less experience. I think there were better players than me on the platform but I kept out of their way as much as possible. The strategy worked.” He also added his thoughts about the prize package he won and the stiff competition ahead by stating, “I’m delighted to have won a World Open V package – if that event was held 50 meters up I still think I would have some serious problems with players like Mike Sexton and Tom Dwan!”

Poker commentator Jesse May was one of the onlookers who said, “The idea of a game 50 meters up was spectacular and it was brilliant how the crowds gathered below. Congratulations to Johannes, he’ll have quite some story for the World Open. It must have been a great feeling getting pocket rockets in the sky!”

Winners to the Sky High event snagged their seats through a special promotion and satellite tournament held on Party Poker. Happy with the turnout for the Poker in the Sky event and the media coverage, a spokesman from Party Poker stated, “Poker in the Sky was a successful tournament and a brilliant experience for the players. We’d like to congratulate Johannes on his win and wish him the very best of luck in the World Open V.”

While Johannes Jorgensen is flying high after winning a $13,000 package for the PartyPoker World Open V, which takes place in London between the 11th -15th of October, his winning high hands will have to keep coming when he faces off against poker pros like the ‘Ambassador of Poker’ Mike Sexton and Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan next month.

Players wishing to join the fun and win their seat to the World Open V still have time! Grounded satellites are running now – only on Party Poker!
