2009 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Begins with Bracelet Event 58

Day 1A began on September 21st, 2009 with No Limit Holdem and 295 entrants that ponied up a buy-in of ₤1000 (= $1,650 USD).  Day1B will be the determining factor in the total prize pool, number of places paid and the 1st place prize.   This event will run through September 21st.

Day 1A tournament play began as 10-handed and as players were eliminated, the tables ran nine-handed throughout most of the day.  The starting chip stack was 3,000 with blinds at 25-25.  Each level ran one hour and the day consisted of 10 levels of play.  Play began at12:15 PM and ended around 1 AM, when level 10 concluded.

Two former WSOPE gold bracelet winners were in the competitive race on Day 1A.  Both Sherkahn Farnood and Jesper Hougaard won events last year during the London series.  And many notable World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet winners and poker playing notables were in this event also such as Phil Hellmuth, Jean-Robert Bellande, Brandon Cantu, Sherkahn Farnood, Eric Seidel, Layne Flack, Raymond Rahme, Mori Eskandani, John Duthie, Barry Greenstein, Vitaly Lunkin, Roland De Wolfe, Nikolay Evdakov, Jeff Madsen, Huck Seed, Chris Bjorin, Andy Bloch, Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott, Neil Channing, Surinder Sunar, Jesper Hougaard, and others.

J.P. Kelly AKA John-Paul Kelly from Aylesbury, UK won a gold bracelet earlier this year in the Las Vegas portion of the WSOP.  Kelly holds the chip lead by a large margin on Day 1A and should Kelly claim this event, he will become the first British WSOPE champion.  A note of interest—all previous seven gold bracelet events in the WSOPE have been won by non-English players.

Day 1B action begins on Saturday, September 19th, at 12 PM.  When play continues on Day 2, the survivors from Days 1A and 1B will combine and start with blinds at 500-1000, ante 100, on Sunday at 2 PM.  The final table is set for September 21st.

Casino at the Empire spreads the 16 day WSOPE event; with a 35 poker table capacity regular gaming tables are removed during the WSOPE event.  Tournament Director Jack Effel—overseeing all WSOP events since 2006—and WSOP President and Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack held a short pre-tournament ceremony with the players before Event 58 began.

2009 marks the third consecutive year of the WSOPE.  2007 boasted of three gold bracelet events and 2008 held four gold bracelet events.  The WSOP events 1-57 were held in Las Vegas from May 26th through July 15th (with event 57 culminating in November when “The Nine” return to crown a world champion).  Events 58 through 61 are played in London, England from September 1st through October 1st.  All WSOPE results are official WSOP events and included in all-time wins, cashes, final table appearances, and all things pertaining to WSOP records.

Betfair Poker has been the official tournament sponsor of the WSOPE since it began.  All four WSOPE events this year will take place at Casino at the Empire in Leicester Square, in Central London.  Casino at the Empire is part of London Clubs International and is owned by Harrah’s Entertainment.
