I'm heading back to Las Vegas tomorrow. The holidays have been filled with a lot of good times but not much poker. I did manage to play a little .05/.10 Pot Limit Omaha at Full Tilt Poker yesterday. It was an up and down session. I started with $10 at three tables and lost $10 quickly at one table when I flopped top two and got it all in against a player with a wrap and flush draw. He was the favorite and improved. I played for another 30 minutes and managed to get almost back to even, ending the session down $1.

They say that poker is a game of skill. We would all like to believe that statement is true, and that whenever we play our best, we will win. And yet, we know from experience that the luck of the cards will be a huge determining factor in how much money we will win or lose in a given session or tournament. For example, in my previous article on a tournament win, I described a hand at the final table where I was all-in for my tournament life with pocket tens against queens, only to four-flush my opponent.

The poker industry has become more embroiled in U.S. politics than most people ever anticipated, but the sharp increase in the game’s popularity over the past decade made it inevitable. Each year, more cases seem to come to the fore on the local and state levels, and federal legislation has been prominent since the passage of the UIGEA in 2006. As 2010 begins, it behooves the industry to take a look at pending cases and the potential for poker in the new year.
