Splashing the Pot – Poker Good for Stress? Visa Following Suit, Live Poker Scene, Sunday Millions…More

Splashing the Pot captures the foam created by the disturbance and turbulence of action, action, action, and is filled with tidbits above and beyond the victories and beats and adds a little spice to the game of poker.

Research Suggests Playing Poker is Stress Reducer

Researchers from a Canadian University have released results of a study that suggest those who play online poker have reduced stress.  The hormone cortisol, which is believed to rise during times of stress, was reduced by as much as 17 percent in those playing a session of online poker.

Past research has already proven that poker improves cognitive thinking because of the way it exercises the brain, but this is the first study suggesting poker can also be a stress reducer.  This new study suggests that as you get more involved in your session of poker you begin to think less about other things that are stressing you, and in turn, start to become stress free.   What the study doesn’t indicate is if the people they tested rely on online poker to make a living, or do they just play the game as a hobby.

Visa Follows MasterCard and Bans Online Gambling Transactions…Or Do They?

About one month ago MasterCard banned the use of their credit cards to be used for online gambling transactions, and it appears Visa has followed suit.  The new actions, which only affect American players, also make it against Visa’s rules to use a third-party (Click2Pay, UseMyWallet, etc) to fund accounts.  Even though the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act isn’t set to take effect until June 2010, it seems these credit card companies are setting things in motion so they are completely out of the game should the law pass.

However, other sources go as far as saying being unable to use Visa Cards for gambling transactions is a “myth,” but could indeed soon be a reality. This story suggests that Visa itself doesn’t have a problem with their card being used for online gambling, but that the issue stems from where you are trying to deposit from (i.e. the United States).

Ashton Griffin Wins High Roller Event at NAPT, Barbero Wins LAPT Title, Negreanu 2nd at L.A. Poker Classic

Generally, the night before someone is due to compete at a final table for the biggest prize pool of their career it’s usually a wise decision to get some sleep.  For Griffin, whose biggest live cash before this past week was just over $28,000, this wasn’t the case.  Griffin decided to pass up on sleep in favor of some online poker, but that decision didn’t stop him from winning $560,000 the next day at the North American Poker Tour’s High Roller event.  Griffin, exhausted after winning, had this to say about his unique decision to pass up on sleep: “It may not be the ordinary way to do things, but I'm not that ordinary.”

Over at the Latin American Poker Tour’s Punta del Este stop, Jose “Nacho” Barbero has taken down the Main Event championship and the $279,330 to go along with it.  On the last edition of “Splashing the Pot” we pointed out how Barbero had a top ten stack with five tables to go, and he was able to parlay that into the biggest win of his poker career.  A Team PokerStars Pro, Barbero’s previous best cash was $73,183 at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $925 event.

Over in Los Angeles, Daniel Negreanu, another PokerStars Pro, is second in chips at the L.A. Poker Classic Main Event with a buy-in of $10,000.  Online poker professional Taylor “tramp$d0pray” Paur is in first place of the event with 50 players remaining.

PokerStars Sunday Millions Reaches High Payouts Again

While it may be a while before we see the PokerStars Sunday Millions tournament surpass their prize pool of more than 7.2 million dollars and over 36,000 runners, but that’s not to say their “normal” weekly tournament still won’t have exceptional numbers.

Just one week after the Forty Billionth Hand Celebration, a week when people expected the numbers to drop considerably, the Sunday Millions tournament turned out a whopping 10,077 hopefuls vying for their share of the $2,015,400.

At the end of the day it was “orionrg” who walked away with the lion’s share of the money.  After agreeing to a heads-up chop, he walked away with $255,429.56.  Second place finisher, “dean23price,” entered the final table with a commanding chip lead, but at the end of the day he had to settle for $232,302.46, which he had no problem doing.  “orionrg’s” previous high cash was $4,167 dollars.

Big Winners (and Losers) Over the Last 24 hours in High Stakes Action

Over the last 24 hours the high stakes action at Full Tilt has seen some huge swings.  The biggest winner of that period was David Benefield who has won nearly 100k more than the next closest person in that time frame.  Benefield, playing Omaha PLO is up $244,846.  Second to him is Gus Hansen, whose bankroll always seems to be on a roller coaster, won $149,838.
The big losers in this time frame are “luckyexpress10,” who has dropped nearly 300k, and “LarsLuzak” is down 214k.

Additionally, every railbird’s favorite target, Isildur finds himself down $48,000 over the last 24-hours.
