Splashing the Pot captures the foam created by the disturbance and turbulence of action, action, action, and is filled with tidbits above and beyond the victories and beats and adds a little spice to the game of poker.

World Team Poker Competitors Ready to Compete for “Pride, Passion, Country”

On May 19 competitors from eight countries will do battle at the Golden Nugget at the inaugural World Team Poker event.  Leading the way for Team USA will be team owner Phil Hellmuth.  The captain of the American squad will be “The Godfather of Poker,” Doyle Brunson.  The remaining members of Team USA roster read like a virtual who’s who of poker over the last couple of decades.  Those names include Jennifer Harman, Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham, Chris Ferguson, Erik Seidel, and the brother/sister combination of Howard Lederer and Annie Duke.

The competition of the other seven countries will be stiff, even though USA will be enjoying a home country advantage.  Those countries and their captains are China:  Johnny Chan and David Chiu, Australia: Jeff Lisandro and Tony G., Israel: Eli Elezra, Vietnam: Men “The Master” Nguyen, England: Ben Roberts, Brazil: Juliano Maesano, and Greece: George Kapalas and George Theofanopoulos.

The format of the event is a unique one.  The teams will compete in five man teams in the games of NLH, LH and PLO.  The last two players from each shootout table will meet at a final table.  Additionally, the team captains of each country can choose to substitute for a player at any time during the game, adding a new level of strategy never before seen in a poker competition.
World Team Poker events will be held throughout the year, which like other sports will have a playoff format to eventually determine the World Team Poker Champions.

2010 PokerStars NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event Day 2 Update

The PokerStars North American Poker Tour has made its latest stop at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.  As the second day action heats up, the top 10 chip counts are filled with a slew of well known names.  Leading the way is David Williams.  The 2004 World Series of Poker runner-up has made runs in big tournaments since then, but for the most part has been unable to reach the heights he did of six years ago.

Right behind Williams, in second place, is PokerStars pro Vanessa Selbst.  Other well known players rounding out the top ten are Brandon Cantu, Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy, and Todd Terry.  Also still hanging around in the middle of the pack is Shaun Deeb.  Deeb announced late last year that he was retiring from tournament play, but has recanted those statements a bit, now saying he’ll just play when he feels like it.  Among those barely hanging on is Daniel Negreanu, but a double up or two and he’s right back into contention.

The NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event will wrap-up on Sunday, with the winner walking away with an impressive $750,000 pay day.

France Passes Online Gambling Bill in Effort to Eliminate Black Market Wagering

It seems France was sick of losing billions of Euros a year to black market gambling, and has just passed a bill legalizing online gambling in the country.  An unspecified amount of Euros was placed on sports bets and slot machines in underground casinos and games throughout the country, but those numbers likely were much more than 36.7 billion Euros in bets that took place at the countries two legal gambling facilities.

The Budget Minister of France, Francois Baroin, said this about the law passing: “This text will allow us to progressively dry up the black market in online gambling by creating a legal offer which obeys the rules.”  France will take a tax of 7.5 percent on those wagering on sporting events and horse racing and will take 2 percent of poker bets.
In addition to opening up gambling to its residents, the bill also states that it will block illegal online websites, and will have strict punishments for websites trying to bypass the new law.  The new bill will most likely be set in place in June, ironically the same month American’s await their fate regarding the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

Commonwealth of Kentucky Sues Full Tilt for Lost Revenue

The Commonwealth of Kentucky has sued Full Tilt for loss of revenue.   In a time where it seems every state in the Union is determining if they will make online poker and gambling illegal, a skill game or game of chance, it’s apparent Kentucky is pretty adamant about what they think of the game.

Kentucky is seeking lost revenue from Full Tilt Poker for the dates between March 25, 2005 and Sept 25, 2009.  The state says that the 13,000 people who play on Full Tilt were taking away money that could have potentially been put back into the state, and that in turn is what they are seeking.  The lawsuit calls the transactions between these players and the online poker giant “tortuous acts.”

This news comes in addition to the news that the owners of Full Tilt are under investigation by a grand jury in Manhattan, with the threat of hefty fines and jail time.  The Full Tilt owners include the names of Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson.

Full Tilt has yet to comment on either of these cases.

PartyPoker Big Game IV Line-up Grows

Two of the biggest names in the game, “Isildur1” and Tony G. (with Tony G. reportedly backing “Isildur1” for the event), had already confirmed their presence at the PartyPoker Big Game IV, but the roster has become even stronger.

Other poker heavyweights now confirmed to take place in the 48 hour cash game are Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo, Jake Cody, Roland de Wolfe, Neil Channing, and Dusty Schmidt.

The event will begin this Sunday from the Les Ambassadeurs Club in Mayfair, London, and will be televised live to a UK audience.  The players will all come into their own entrance music, much like a professional boxer or wrestler would do.  Keeping in his true mysterious fashion, it is yet unknown what music “Isildur1” one will make his first televised appearance to.  Tony G. will be coming out to “Bicycle Race” by Queen, while Jennifer Tilly will come out to the appropriate “Man Eater” by Hall and Oates.
