Isildur1 Cancels PartyPoker Big Game Appearance

It was suspicious when the mysterious online poker player chose the time around April Fool’s Day to accept Tony G’s offer to accept backing and appear at the upcoming PartyPoker Big Game in London. But Tony G confirmed that he spoke to Isildur1 and everything was in place for the much-anticipated appearance with the exception of deciding whether or not the Swedish player would finally show his face or don a mask. However, all of that excitement has been squashed with the most recent announcement that Isildur1 has canceled his coming-out party.

The story was big because of several factors. Not only did Isildur1 make a splash in the online poker world toward the end of 2009 by entering the high-stakes games against players like Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan, but he had some success until one $4 million losing session to Brian Hastings. But moving to lower stakes and rebuilding the bankroll saw Isildur1 return to the high stakes tables of late. Even more interesting, however, was the fact that the players kept his identity a secret. All that was known was that he hailed from Sweden, and all other information was purely speculative.

In 2010, Tony G reached out to Isildur1 and offered to stake him in the PartyPoker Big Game IV, a high-stakes cash game filmed for television broadcast. The offer included protection of his anonymity if he wished, and the two were in talks about the topic. But more than that, the poker world was buzzing at the chance to catch their first glimpse of the online poker phenom Isildur1.

But less than two weeks later, the plan fell apart. Tony G posted on April 10 on his PartyPoker blog that he received a message from Isildur 1: “Sry for not coming, take care bud.”

Tony G revealed that Isildur1 backed out of his appearance at the PartyPoker Big Game, and it was confirmed by organizers associated with the game. “To say I am disappointed is an understatement,” Tony G wrote. “I have spent so much time talking to him and reassuring him recently but he’s just not going to come… It has left a bad taste in my mouth. What you have to understand is that he reached out to me first and asked and then agreed to play. As far as I am concerned I am washing my hands with him and moving on.”

With so much money already shipped to London for the Big Game, Tony G noted that he will be staking another player in the cash game, though he or she has not been named. And in one last note about Isildur1, Tony G noted on his personal blog that Isildur1 will appear at the EPT Grand Finale in Monte Carlo. “I’ll be waiting,” said Tony G.

The PartyPoker Big Game IV will take place between April 11 and 13 at Les Ambassadeurs Club in Mayfair, London.
