Splashing the Pot captures the foam created by the disturbance and turbulence of action, action, action, and is filled with tidbits above and beyond the victories and beats and adds a little spice to the game of poker.

Phil Ivey Wins Eighth WSOP Bracelet, Asks “How Much I Win?”

Phil Ivey inched closer to being the all-time WSOP bracelet winner by earning his eighth career WSOP victory.  Ivey’s win came in the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E event, battling past former bracelet winner Bill Chen in heads-up play to claim the victory. Phil Hellmuth holds the record for most WSOP victories with 11, but at the pace Ivey has been winning bracelets he would get to 11 in just a couple of years.  Ivey earned $329,840 for the win, which he didn’t find out until he was posing for pictures a few minutes after the fact.  In other words, the bracelet meant more to Ivey, than the 300k plus, which is just one decent sized pot in his normal high stake cash games.

Ivey Considers Skipping WSOP Tournament of Champions

ESPN’s Inside Deal is reporting that Phil Ivey may not even play in the WSOP “Tournament of Champions,” scheduled for June 27 at the Rio.   Ivey, who earned the most votes in the “TOC” voting, may skip out on the event  because it interferes with other events that he has side-bets in.  When Ivey won his bracelet a number of side bet rumors came to surface.  One of the more popular rumors was that he won $1.5 million from Tom “Durrrr” Dwan, but Dwan can win it back if he is able to win at least one bracelet this year.  Also, he may have won five million dollars from Howard Lederer.  To add validity to that rumor, shortly after Ivey won the event, Lederer Tweeted one word: “Gulp…”

Annie Duke and Jennifer Harman Among “Women in Poker” Hall of Fame Candidates

This week the “Women in Poker” released the names of the women voted on by the public who will be eligible for their Hall of Fame. Only two of the seven candidates will make the hall-of-fame from the list, meaning your vote is vital.  The seven candidates are Betty Carrey, Phyllis Caro, Nani Dollison, Annie Duke, Jennifer Harman, Kathy Liebert, and JJ Liu.  The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at The Golden Nugget Casino on September 3rd at 6 PM.

New Hampshire Offering Online Gambling Games

Starting next week the state of New Hampshire will begin offering lottery tickets that will allow them to play online games of chance.  The lottery commissioner of the state says, “a lot of people are reluctant to stand in a store and scratch scratch-off tickets.”  Also, it is expected to cause more young people to play these lottery games because it implements the computer.  Others are confused by this measure because it’s similar to slot machines, which state law makers oppose.  As with everything gambling related, half say it’s similar, while half say it’s not even close.

Harrah’s still Looking for Rio Buyer

A few months before the World Series of Poker, Harrah’s announced that they were putting the Rio (Home of the WSOP) up for sale.  Despite a few offers, including one from Penn Gambling, which would  keep the WSOP at the Rio, there is still no buyer.  Part of the reason for the lack of interest is believed to be that the Rio would need major renovations to keep it on-par with the mega resorts on the strip.  Reports state that the Rio hasn’t had any major renovations in 20 years.

Shannon Elizabeth Accused of Taking Large Rake at Home Poker Game

Gossip Queen, er, King, Perez Hilton has posted a story on his website where a reader claims Shannon Elizabeth takes an unusually high rake (and illegal) from her home poker game.   The Perez Hilton reader wrote in to say that they thought they would actually be playing poker with Elizabeth, but Elizabeth wasn’t even part of the game.  Instead, her only role in the game was to come in and out of the room hosting the poker game to take an illegal rake.  In one hand of poker, the writer claims, Elizabeth took $25 out of a $70 pot.

PokerStars Sponsoring Professional Basketball Team in Spain and a Professional Soccer Star

PokerStars has announced that they will be sponsoring the Spanish Basketball Federation at the World Basketball Championships in August.  The specifics of the deal are not known, but PokerStars banners are expected to be displayed throughout the stadiums Spain plays in during the basketball championships, which will be in Turkey.  Spain is one of the favorites in the event.

Additionally, PokerStars has added a new member to their roster.  This week they signed Argentinean soccer star Juan Sebastian Veron.  However, you won’t see Veron anytime at a poker table, either online or at the WSOP, because he is currently in South Africa attempting to bring the World Cup title home to his native Argentina.
New Zealand Court: Advertising Doesn’t Cause Gambling

A New Zealand Court determined this week that the ending “.net” in a poker or gambling website does not induce gambling.  Because .net’s aren’t permitted to allow gambling, is the main reason the court ruled in the .net’s favor.  For example, you can put money on, but you cannot do that on  Additionally, the court ruled that poker tournaments are not an illegal form of gambling, specifically focusing on the Asia Pacific Poker Tour.  The court said that it is a competition because it includes both an entrance fee and prize money at the end of it.  The entire list of the court’s findings can be found here.
