What They’re Playing

UKIPT Edinburgh:  The PokerStars-sponsored United Kingdom & Ireland Poker Tour hit Scotland this week with its stop in Edinburgh. The tournament drew some big names for its first two starting days, including Liv Boeree, Vicky Coren, JP Kelly, and Julian Thew. All in all, there were 401 players at the tables to start the action, which made for a prize pool of £200,500. When the tournament comes to an end on August 22, the last 56 players will have been paid with the winner taking home £50,000.

WSOP Circuit:
When the World Series of Poker took its break in the middle of July, players had a bit more than a month off before the WSOP Circuit events started up, and this was the week that it happened. The Horseshoe Council Bluffs in Iowa was the place to be, as 13 days of events got underway on August 19, though the first official ring event didn’t start until August 20 with a two-day $345 buy-in no-limit holdem tournament offering a Circuit ring as the top prize. The new season features a points tally for some of the events for a Player of the Year ranking, and some of the Main Events will be filmed for television, such as the Main Event in Council Bluffs. That tournament starts on August 29, runs for three days, and requires a $1,600 buy-in. An interesting season has kicked off in Iowa and will run through May of 2011.

FTP Cyprus:  The Full Tilt Poker Merit Cyprus Classic got started this week with two events, a high roller freezeout tournament and the Main Event. The first event brought some big names to the high roller tables with their $25,000 buy-ins, and the final table was set with players like David Benyamine, Jon Turner, Carter Phillips, and Andrew Feldman. That was set to play out on August 20, while the Main Event got started with its first of two starting days at the same time. The action will be reported live as it happens.

WPT Legends of Poker:  With the live poker scene kicking into high gear after the post-WSOP lull, there was no shortage of action. And the World Poker Tour was ready to host one of its most popular events of the year with the Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles. The lower buy-in of $5,000 looked to bring players to the tables who had long been unable to afford WPT events, and the L.A. location was appealing to many looking for beautiful weather to go with their poker action. The first of two starting days was August 20, and the final table would play out on August 25.

Who’s Playing

CA Tribes:
In an effort to gain support for and encourage conversation about California’s efforts to pass intrastate online gaming legislation, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians has organized a California Intertribal Intrastate Poker Consortium. Thus far, a total of 21 tribes have promised to participate, many of whom disagree with the recent legislative efforts. Should the proposed bill not pass by the end of the current session on August 31, the bill may be put on hold until 2011, so Morongo is ramping up its efforts to find some common ground on which to base more support for the legislation.
