Introduce Your Significant Other to Poker

Shortly after I began playing online poker, I quickly discovered it was taking precious time away from my wife. I played mostly MTT’s which can take 4-5 hours or more if you get deep. This started to put a strain on our relationship. She couldn’t understand why I would rather spend hours at a time in front of the computer instead of relaxing on the couch enjoying time with her.

It was quite a dilemma.

I caught the poker bug and enjoyed the competitive nature of the game. Live games introduce a social aspect which makes poker even more enjoyable. I thought a live home game with friends would help her begin to understand and possibly accept my passion for poker.

A friend of mine was hosting a monthly home game and I brought my wife along. If you’ve ever played a home game, you know the ultimate goal is not to make money. The goal is to throw down a memorable bluff or bad beat on one of your friends. The stakes are usually low and there’s not a lot of money at risk. It’s all good fun.

Throw back a few cold ones and socialize with other players after you bust out. You discuss how hands were played and even other topics outside of poker. It’s more of a social event than anything. That is how I introduced my wife to poker. She loved the social aspect and had a better understanding of what I was doing. She had a lot of questions about the game and why I did this or that. We played more home games and she even created her own online poker account at several of the same sites, I play, to improve her own game and have some fun.

We play on PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker primarily because of the amount of player traffic, variety of games, and tournament choices. Many well known professional players play on Full Tilt including, Allen Cunningham, Mike Matusow, Phil Ivey and Gus Hansen to name a few. Rarely do you get an opportunity to play with a well known poker pro. You can do this every day at Full Tilt Poker. We also enjoy playing at Bodog poker. Bodog offers sports betting and casino games such as craps, blackjack, pai-gow, roulette and many other favorites in addition to poker. All three sites offer satellites into some of the biggest land based poker tournaments in the world including, the WSOP, Aussie Millions, and WPT events. Each of the sites has exclusive PokerWorks sign-up bonuses.

If your wife is having difficulty with the amount of time you’re spending at the tables, find a local home game or host one. She just might catch the poker bug herself.
