The Los Angeles Times reported the passing of Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss on Monday. Buss, who was hospitalized on Thursday with an undisclosed form of cancer (according to Mike Bresnahan), had his 80th birthday in January.

Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979 - along with the NHL's Kings, the Forum and a ranch in Sierra Nevada - for $67.5m. The Lakers franchise was recently valued at $1 billion by Forbes magazine. Basketball legends that played and coached under Buss included: Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Phil Jackson.

Buss was also a great ambassador for the game of poker. He played high-stakes cash games in California and appeared on High Stakes Poker, along with playing dozens of events at the World Series of Poker. Buss talked to ESPN in 2010 about the possibility of becoming a professional poker player, “Whether I can earn a living at it is questionable… I can’t think of too many things I can do as easily as that and be competitive at my age.”

Buss finished third in a $2,500 Seven Card Stud event in 1991 to make his total WSOP cashes total four.

PokerNews Podcast talked with Buss in 2011 (38:25):
