A $33 million heist hit the news last week with Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia being the victim. Crown Casino is home to the Aussie Millions and the 2013 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific. 7News Sydney reported on more international crime news in Australia; police busted an international crime syndicate in Melbourne and Sydney when they seized a large amount of money, goods, casino chips, and arrested 27 people.
- AUD$5 million in residential properties
- AUD$4 million in cash, AUD$600,000 in casino chips
- AUD$10,000 worth of jewelry and designer handbags, luxury and exotic cars
- 42 kilograms of drugs
Reports show that "Operation Volante" was the name of the campaign against the syndicate and was headed up by the Australian Federal Police in cooperation with Victoria Police. The goal to "target a longstanding organized crime group importing and trafficking large quantities of illegal drugs into Australia," kicked off last April but the operation is not aware if the two events within the past week are related.
From Commander David Sharpe of the Australian Federal Police: "This investigation was about following the money trails, removing the wealth and cutting off distribution networks in Australia and internationally.
"This investigation is not over," Sharpe added. "It continues across Australia and internationally and further arrests will be made."
