888poker.com released news on Wednesday that football star Luis Suarez's sponsorship contract was "under review" after the Uruguayan striker appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match. The review by 888poker brought the announcement of the termination of the sponsorship deal with Suarez.
"888poker signed Luis Suarez following a fantastic season for which his achievements were widely recognized," a statement on the company's website said. "Regrettably, following his actions during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy on Tuesday, 888poker has decided to terminate its relationship with Luis Suarez with immediate effect."
FIFA announced the decision to ban Suarez from nine international matches and to suspend him from any football activity for four months and 888poker's decision came within 24 hours. Suarez will miss the remainder of the World Cup and also part of the upcoming English Premier League (EPL) season due to the suspension.
Suarez is no stranger to being banned for biting or for using racially abusive language. He was dealt a 10-match ban in April of last year when he bit Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during an EPL match. Then he spent seven matches out of action in November of 2010 when the Dutch FA banned him for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal. For use of abusive language Suarez received an eight-match ban and a £40,000 fine when he verbally attacked Manchester United's Patrice Evra in 2011.
