The onslaught of closures and raids by French authorities on major gambling establishments has brought about a precautionary measure by PokerStars. The world's leading online poker site has cancelled the next leg of the French Poker Series (FPS). The series was due to start in Paris on November 21st.
Cercle Cadet was the chosen location for the series but the room has been closed for an "undetermined amount of time" after a raid by the French Judicial Police (DCPJ) took place on October 14th. The poker series would have brought hundreds of players to the tables but instead, due to the government's unrelenting charge, the French capital will be deprived of that boost to the economy.
"The current situation and the closure of some gambling rooms in Paris damages the players and the industry, and this is unfortunate," the President of the France Poker Series Cédric Billot told the press.
The investigation by the French authorities has also pulled the Aviation Club de France into the mire which forced management to cancel the upcoming FPS — "it was impossible to find, in such a short time, another trusted partner that would allow us to organize the FPS in Paris and in optimal conditions."
Billot said that players who have qualified for the event on France's PokerStars.fr will be offered some form of compensation.
"We will propose some form of compensation to all the online qualifiers," Billot said. "We will also obviously help all the players who have qualified via live satellites. We are really sorry to be forced to cancel this FPS stop, but at the same time we still have some other great events for our players as the ones in Deauville, Namur, Prague, or even the French Championship of Online Poker (FCOOP)."
France's PokerNews.com Johan le Mestre reports that all online and live qualifiers now have the following five different options available to trade their FPS Paris ticket for:
- FPS Final in Deauville
- Belgian Poker Series in Namur
- Eureka Poker Tour Prague
- Two different packages for the FCOOP that are set to run on PokerStars.fr November 2nd-17th.
