The World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) will bring the poker players of the world to Berlin in October but look for more excitement and opportunities to travel the globe and play in prestigious WSOP events as a WSOP-branded event heads to Italy
WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart hinted at the news to PokerNews.com not long after Martin Jacobson’s victory at the WSOP Main Event. On Friday the hinting was in the past and the news was on the front burner when Italy’s GiocoNews brought more details to light from the Director of Events & Sponsorship at Caesars Interactive Entertainment, Simone Ricci.
"Although will soon release the official program of the event, I can already say that between Sept. 16-30, we are going to launch the first-ever WSOP event in Italy, at the Casino di Campione," Ricci said.
A series of satellites for WSOPE tournaments are in the planning stages. Italy's organizers are working to bring the WSOP brand to Europe and build support for October's WSOPE stop in Berlin.
"We hope to see some good numbers in Campione," Ricci added. "The event will take place 10 days before the beginning of the WSOP Europe in Berlin, and this means that we will obviously run a number of satellites to the WSOPE event once in Campione."
It appears that Italy is just the beginning of the newly plotted WSOP map. Ricci has lifted the edge of the curtain and allowed a small glimpse of what could be the beginning of the most famous brand in the live poker industry hosting events in Europe.
"Italy represents an important country for us, and right now, we are trying to finalize some deals with other European locations," Ricci said. It appears that Europe may be just the beginning in terms of new WSOP Circuit events popping up around the world — Morocco, Mexico and Latin-America could very well be stops for future ring winners.
Recently the European Poker Tour removed Italy’s Sanremo stop from the schedule and the country was left without a major, international, live poker event. "It is important for Italy to get this opportunity," Ricci went on to say. “We are sure that the one in Campione is going to be a great event and we are very happy with the deal we signed with the casino."
