Thankfully in this day and age the sight of a woman poker player doesn’t evoke shock like it once did not so long ago. However, the truth is that when you are looking at the entire history of the game it is men who have played since the invention of poker, hence giving them the chance to complete all the “firsts” in poker. So, what makes today’s profiled player, Kathy Liebert, so impressive is the number of “firsts” she has completed in her professional poker career.

John Juanda certainly came from humble beginnings, but since then has become one of the most respected players in the world today. He has also remained humble, which is a welcome sight (and sound) in comparison to a lot of players who seemingly enjoy seeing how much attention they can create for themselves, both at and away from the tables. A few times I have alluded to a fictional Mount Rushmore, with poker players taking the place of presidents.

When I met Gavin Smith this summer at the Boys and Girls Club Charity Event hosted by Howard and Suzie Lederer at the Golden Nugget, I have to admit that I thought he looked like the cab driver that had just driven me to the event. It was not meant to be an insult, it was just an observation and a realization that you should never judge a poker player by his looks, especially when the one you are talking to has won over five million dollars in live poker tournaments, hundreds of thousands more online, and who knows how much in cash games.

Poker players with a lot of money seem to always be looking for ways to do something they have never done before. Many poker players enjoy getting adrenalin rushes by participating in crazy propositional bets that range from standing in the ocean for hours at a time to running marathons during the summer months of Las Vegas. Others take exotic vacations where they visit remote locations, swim with sharks, and maybe go hang gliding, cliff diving and bungee jumping, looking for a thrill they aren’t able to get at a poker table.

It’s a proven fact that poker is one of the few games (including sports) where people who make their living either writing about poker or running a website about poker can actually participate in the top poker events around the world. I used to run a boxing website, where I was able to interview many of the top fighters in the sport. But just because I did that it didn’t give me the right to step into the ring with the heavyweight champion of the world and try to take his title from him – not that I want to.

Admittedly, before starting research on this story, most of what I knew about Jean-Robert Bellande is that some fellow poker players had poked fun at him because of the way he decided to pronounce his name, saying Robert with a French accent as opposed to the English pronunciation. I believe it was ESPN’s World Series of Poker announcer and writer Norman Chad that pointed out that a guy born in Long Island, who grew up in Taiwan, most likely wouldn’t have any French accents in his name.
