Admittedly, before starting research on this story, most of what I knew about Jean-Robert Bellande is that some fellow poker players had poked fun at him because of the way he decided to pronounce his name, saying Robert with a French accent as opposed to the English pronunciation. I believe it was ESPN’s World Series of Poker announcer and writer Norman Chad that pointed out that a guy born in Long Island, who grew up in Taiwan, most likely wouldn’t have any French accents in his name.

Vanessa Selbst is one of the best poker players that not many people have heard of. From time to time we’ve run across players in our “Where Are They Now” series that fits that description. Some poker players prefer to stay under the radar. A lot of poker players in the younger generation were able to get off to an early start in the game. In the days before the internet 21 was the legal age in most places before one could even sit down at a poker table in a casino, making that the first time they had ever played for money outside of small games with family members. Of course you could have managed a fake I.D., but still the percentage of people playing poker at a young age was minimal, at best. It gives me pause for a moment to look back on the stories I’ve done and realize that a good portion of successful poker players were well on their way to succeeding in another field, be it a sport or a business, before turning those energies to poker. In turn, it seems that a large portion of people that have succeeded in the world of poker would have, cliché’s aside, done well in anything they tried.
