With the addition of events, like the $1k NLH Stimulus event and the $40K event, the 2009 WSOP is expected to be home to many of the poker pros for six weeks, each hoping to be the last player standing in November as the final table is played down.

Players returned to the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event final table after dinner break with fresh faces. The seven remaining players were fully aware that they may be in for a long night, as the first seven hours of play only resulted in two eliminations. The two-hour break gave players a chance to relax, unwind, enjoy some food, and likely a few naps. But upon their return to the Rio’s Penn & Teller Theater, play continued as if nothing ever happened.

The media was allowed in to the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas before the fans. We passed throngs of people in the hallway near the entrance, as they sported shirts and hats indicative of who they were supporting at the table. The atmosphere was filled with excitement before the theater itself was even full, all in anticipation of the World Series of Poker 2009 Main Event final table.

When the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event began in July, there were 6,494 players vying for the opportunity to be at the final table. But it wasn’t until the late-night hours of July 15 with the elimination of Jordan Smith in tenth place that those nine players were determined, and they went on a subsequent break that would lead to selective media attention and various preparations for the action that would resume in November.

With only 18 players left, viewers looked forward to a night of coverage where there were only two tables to focus on, as the last nine eliminations were set to take place, leading to the highly-anticipated November Nine. With all the players seated at tables where the hole cards could be seen, it was a great opportunity to get a final impression of each of the players who will battle it out for the ultimate poker prize at the end of the week. After an exciting summer, poker players and fans were in a holding pattern for several months until they could find out who would claim the title of 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event champion. The nine final table players walked away with more than $1.2 million each when play stopped on July 15, and the November Nine have been waiting for their chance to compete for the $8.5 million first place prize. That time is finally fast approaching, and the Rio, Harrah’s, and ESPN are preparing to present the highly-anticipated event in short order.

And then there were 27. The final three tables included the universally acknowledged best player in poker (Phil Ivey), one woman (Leo Margets), one magician-turned-poker-pro (Antonio Esfandiari) and most importantly, nine combatants who were soon to become the November Nine. As ESPN’s coverage continued tonight, all eyes were on how those nine would emerge from the pack.
