Jason Mercier held a dominating chip lead over the other eight players as the final table began. Tonight’s coverage of the Main Event of the World Series of Poker Europe featured play on days three and four, with the first hour focusing on reducing the field to the 36-player money bubble, and the final two hours taking us down to the final table of nine. Unlike the Main Event in Las Vegas, very few amateurs even entered the European tournament, and the quality of play has been very high. Let’s see how these two days played out.

ESPN kicked off coverage of last year’s World Series of Poker Europe, hosted by Lon McEachern, Norman Chad, and, as a sideline reporter, Kara Scott, with a telecast of a brand-new event, the Caesar’s Cup. Just as golf and tennis, which are largely individual sports, have the Ryder and Davis Cups, respectively, as team competitions where players represent their countries or continents, the Caesar’s Cup brought together two teams of poker stars playing for either Europe or the Americas, and promised to bring some fascinating action to the felt.

The elite of the poker world descended upon the Casino at the Empire in London’s Leicester Square. Some of them played the preliminary events, others played cash games, and many took in the sights and sounds of London, England. But they were all there for one primary reason, and that was the third annual World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Main Event.The action began on September 26, 2009, with the first of two starting days for the £10,000 buy-in tournament.

The World Series of Poker Europe Main Event Championship event began on September 26th with 156 players. The event has reached the final table of nine. Final table play starts at noon on Thursday and play resumes with 10,000-20,000 blinds and a 3,000 ante. There are 55:06 minutes remaining in Level 22.Many poker superstars competed in the Championship Event and the final table is still filled with big names and WSOP bracelet winners. The final nine are:Seat 1: Barry Shulman, Las Vegas NV, holds a gold bracelet in the 7 Card Stud 8 or Better Championship in 2001.

Matt Hawrilenko from Boston, MA, won more than $1,000,000 when he claimed the gold bracelet and first place in event #56 , Six-handed No Limit Holdem $5,000 buy-in, at this year’s WSOP. Hawrilenko has a slight chip lead as the WSOPE Main Event moves into Day Four with 36 players still alive and in the prize money.Hawrilenko, a 27 year old poker pro, also known as “Hoss-TBF,” made three final table appearances at the 2009 WSOP.

The end of Day Two in the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event Championship finds 92 players still fighting for the gold bracelet and a championship title. Poker great Doyle Brunson is currently in sixth place in chips – this could be a true historical event.Ian Munns of London, UK is the chip leader after the second day and it’s possible that 2009 could be the year of the repeat with former WSOPE Champions John Juanda and Annette Obrestad still in the main event. November Niner James Ankenhead is in the top 20 and UK Footballer Teddy Sheringham is still in the tournament.
