Allen Cunningham was working on a degree in Engineering at UCLA, but most of his “higher” education really came from the poker tables at the local casinos. He found such success at the tables that at 19 he dropped out of school to pursue poker as a full time career—at the time his play was confined to tribal casinos until he turned 21.
Born March 28, 1977, in Riverside, California, Cunningham jumped into the tournament scene as soon as possible, his first real success coming in 1999 at the Bicycle Casino’s Legends of Poker. He made the final table in five events, including first place in the $300 buy-in 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo and the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em events and he was named “Best All-Around Player.”
People really started to take notice of the young Cunningham when he won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in 2001 and followed that up with another one in 2002, both in $5,000 buy-in Stud-Low events.
In 2005 Allen won the ESPN/Toyota tournament title, a new Toyota pick-up and was voted Best All-Around Player under 35 by his professional poker playing peers. He also won his 3rd WSOP bracelet, which would be the beginning of three in a row—winning one in 2006 and
2007, all in hold’em events—and would tie a record with
Johnny Moss, Bill Boyd,
Doyle Brunson, Gary Berland, and
Erik Seidel for winning bracelets in three consecutive years.
Allen has proved he can play against the best players in the world, in 2006 he finished in 4th place in the WSOP main event winning more than $3,600,000 and he impressed his sponsor Full Tilt Poker enough to move him from a pro player to a full member of Team Full Tilt.
With his
2008 WSOP Circuit win at Caesars Palace and another deep finish of 117th place in the main event, Allen’s total live tournament wins exceed $10,200,000 making him 5th on the all time money winners list, behind Jamie Gold, Joe Hachem, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth.
He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada with his girlfriend Melissa Hayden and their dog, Muffin and you can find him online at
Full Tilt Poker.
