Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson might well be the most recognized and renowned figure in professional poker; in fact, in 2006 Bluff Magazine voted him the #1 most influential force in the world of poker. Born in Longworth, a small town in nowhere Texas, with a population of about 100, Doyle had the future of a promising basketball star; those dreams were squelched when he severely injured his leg and knee in a work related accident.

After his injury, Doyle turned his focus to academics, attending Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas and graduating with a master’s degree in Administrative Education in 1955. He took a job as a business machine salesman, but on his first day someone invited him to play in a seven-card stud game; he played, he won, and he has been playing ever since.

Brunson (born August 10, 1933) has been a professional poker player for over 50 years; he was the first player to win a million dollars in tournament play, the first player to win consecutive main events in the World Series of Poker (1976 and 1977) and the first to win both the WSOP Main Event and a World Poker Tour title. He is an inductee to the Poker Hall of Fame and the WPT Poker Walk of Fame.  He is author of Poker Wisdom of a Champion, originally published as According to Doyle  in 1984, and Super Systems originally published in 1978; revised in 2004 as Super Systems 2 with contributing chapters by Bobby Baldwin, Mike Caro, David Sklansky, Chip Reese and Joey Hawthorne. Other publications to his credit are:  Online Poker: Your Guide to Playing Online Poker Safely & Winning Money, 2005; My 50 Most Memorable Hands, 2007; and According to Doyle, 2007.

Nicknamed Texas Dolly—often shortened to just Dolly, Doyle holds ten WSOP bracelets (second only to Phil Hellmuth) and tied with Johnny Chan, he won the 2004 Legends of Poker World Poker Tour event, and  he can regularly be found at the Bellagio, playing High Stakes Poker with some of the best players in the world. Doyle can play and win at any game, but his best game is No-Limit Texas Hold’em—many people credit him for inventing the game.

Doyle, who resides in Las Vegas, has earned more than $5,000,000 in tournament cash, writes a syndicated poker column in the London Telegraph and he writes a blog and serves as spokesperson for the online website DoylesRoom.com; he says if he could change anything in poker or in the world it would be his age.
